Glad your having fun! Did you happen to go to the Santa Maria Assunta in Positano? I'm getting married there in 2005 and want to know if it's under renovation/construction.

Hi, I walked by the church in Positano and I think I remember parts of it was under scaffolding. Any reno should be finished by your wedding time though, this is the time of year when they do their construction work, such as Hotel San Pietro which is closed until March but it is swarming with construction workers.

No, I wasn't intimidated by Napoli but I was with an Italian who knew his way around and I didn't hear about all the recent mafia slayings until the day or so after we went there. I would have gone even if I had known beforehand though since I am from LA.

(Thanks Ira, I waved at Praiano for you)

Mafia slayings? Did they affect tourists or was it an internal thing?

I look at ilMattino online regularly and don't remember anything about recent mafia slayings. Sea Urchin: What do you know about this? And how I envy you as I sit in my cubicle. I was on the Amalfi Coast in June, and while it was unseasonably cool and rainy, it was still magical.

Do a computer search on Yahoo for the news on recent mafia wars between themselves. It was the just regular people outraged as they have finally begun to demand some solutions. It was part of the strike in the area yesterday too.

It mostly happened in a noted housing project area and the tourists usually stay in other areas anyway. I am glad the citizens are demanding more protection as they are in parts of LA where I live.

I wouldn't let it stop me from enjoying Napoli.

Hi SeaUrchin! Lucky you to be back on the Amalfi Coast so soon!!!

I know you have lots to see and do while you are there, BUT if you happen to walk up the road past Le Sirenuse and Villa Rosa (towards the bus stop), there is a wonderful little bookshop on the lefthand side of the road owned (or managed ) by an American woman. She sells some whimsical prints of Positano which are on the wall AND a book of the prints by a New York set designer.

I really, really regret not buying the book BUT I don't know the name of the artist/designer AND I can't find my card from the shop... If you happen to walk by, would you mind getting a card from the shop so I can contact them about buying the book?

I also used the internet at that dress shop! I walked in to check out the dresses and was so delighted that I could check my emails as well!

Enjoy more prosecco, please!

Hi SeaUrchin,
Which town best,(Sorrento, Amalfi..) for a solo female, loves swimming, great outdoor cafes w/great seafood, will depend on public transportation. Looking for R&R but certainly not too quiet at night. I've spent time in Nice solo & no-one looks twice at a single female. Planning mid to late June..Thanks

You won't find much beach in Sorrento, though there are places to swim, -you're better off in Amalfi, which has a more extensive beach area, if you're trying to choose between those two. Or Positano. The beaches are pebbley more than sandy, but the water is just wonderful, and goes from a deep dark blue to aqua in the shallows. There are swimming places at various spots from Praiano to Amalfi, or you can join one of the boat tours that include swimming off the coast as part of the day. My favorite spot was a tiny beach in the part of the coast below Ravello, which was very protected from crowds. If you look, you can find these places, and there are some at the bus stops along the coast, reached by descendong stone steps. The public buses are the way to get back and forth in summer.

Mid June will be very crowded, so there will likely be several other solo females there too, nothing to worry about!.

Awbaker, I am back here but I did walk by where your bookshop must be but I did't notice it, alot of the shops along that part of the road were closed.

I am sorry I didn't know beforehand I would have checked it out for you.

Foodiern, Bellestar gave you as good information as I would have. Fornillo Beach is nice in Positano and there is a private beach on the other side of town but it may be too isolated for a single woman. I got a little nervous swimming there alone but I know other single women (non Italian) who love it there.
In Praiano there is a nice swimming area although you are sitting and jumping off of rocks near the Hotel Onda Verde. The Club AFricain is right near there too for nightlife, but that is about it in that area.

All in all Sorrento has more going on at night, but like I keep writing here the public transportation stops fairly early so don't depend on it to get back to your hotel if you are staying far away from your nightlife.

I guess I really didn't help you that much either! It is all a matter of taste and it is hard to tell someone where to stay when you don't know them.

I know, look at some guidebooks and then come back and ask us some specific questions and maybe we can narrow it down for you.
