Russia-Ukraine by Train - Border Crossing

Hi.
I am currently in Russia and have a double-entry tourist visa. I am planning to take a train to Ukraine for a few days later this month (I've already taken care of the Ukrainian visa). Now, what is the checkpoint procedure? Will the Russian and/or Ukrainian officers go door-to-door and ask for documentation or do I have to let them know in advance that I don't have either the Russian or Ukrainian citizenship? I assume it's in my best interest to make sure that all of my documents are properly stamped so that I can return to Russia following my stay in Ukraine. I will be crossing the border sometime around midnight.
Thanks in advance for your advice.

When you purchase your train ticket they should ask for your passport as ID, and also before you board the train. The border crossing should be fairly easy. At least they use the same gauge tracks and won't have to spend three hours switching cars, as they do with border crossings to/from Poland.

DB,

Hope to take the train from Moscow to Warsaw in September. Is it as much fun as you might cause me to think?

I don't know about fun, but the delay is built into the train schedule. If you cross late at night, it can be more of an annoyance.
