Rovijn As a Day Trip from Trieste
Hi everybody,
Triestelines opened the Trieste-Rovinj-Trieste route and I was wondering if Rovinj is worth visiting as a day trip. I'm not asking this because I think Rovinj isn't worth visiting in general (I know it is), but I mean if a day trip will give me enough time to enjoy myself without rushing it and feeling like I am trying to fit too much in a day.
There's a boat arriving at 10am and leaving at 06pm. Would you do such day trip? I'm also visiting Muggia (the only Istrian town left in Italy) as a day trip, but Rovinj seems gorgeous and I wouldn't like to miss this opportunity (Who knows when I'll be back in the area).
Any thoughts on what to limit myself to with 8 hours there? I'd love to stroll around town and perhaps spend some time on the beach and/or biking (time allowing, of course).
Thanks for your always valuable advice,
Daniel.

I think it would be worth considering. Rovinj is quite small, so I would think you could see quite of lot in 7 hours. If I recall correctly, I reached Rovinj around noon, quickly checked in to my hotel (I was staying 1 night), and began exploring shortly thereafter. I roamed around until after sunset, which I think was around 8 p.m. I saw everything I wanted to see there that day and checked out the next morning. I can understand that many people want to stay longer, but I dont' think you need to. Hope that helps!

Hi Daniel - I think it would be worth it. Rovinj is so compact. You could probably get a nice good walk around the old town and still have time to head out to the island of Crveni Otok for a little piney-rocky beach time, assuming that boat schedule works out right. (Do you know where the Trieste Lines hydrofoil arrives and departs in Rovinj?)
I also think you might easily find that Muggia easily makes for more of a half-day trip from Trieste, not that one couldn't enjoy it for longer. (I've read a lot about the restaurant Taverna Cigui there, but never been.)

Hi Daniel - Sorry if this turns out to be a repeat; a reply I wrote before isn't showing up. I agree that it's worthwhile; I had a similar experience to kja's with a one-night stay. Rovinj is very compact - I bet you can get a nice walk around the old town, and still maybe head to the beach on Crveni Otok, if those boats' schedule works out right - it's not too long a walk to that ferry. (Do you know where the Trieste Lines hydrofoils dock in Rovinj?) It's not a long boat ride out there, and if you hike past the big resort hotel to the far end, it's a nice place for a dip (naturist area fyi).
BTW I think Muggia is easily thought of as a half-day out of Trieste, not that you couldn't linger. I've always wanted to go to the restaurant Taverna Cigui out there, but haven't yet.
Cheers,
Jonathan

Thanks JD,
I'm not sure where the boat arrives exactly at Rovinj. I read in a guidebook that all boats arrive at the dock right next to the old town.
I agree with you that Muggia is pretty much a half day trip. It's a 30 boat ride from Trieste and it's tiny.
Thanks again for your opinion JD; I am definitely doing it!
Daniel.
