Rothenburg Germany

We are spending the night in Rothenburg Germany in April 2009 and would like to hear from anyone woh has been there and what we should see

Only spent a day and night in Rothenburg,but enjoyed the small town so much. My favorite thing was the Watchnight tour which walks you around the town. Also went to the Crime and Punishment Museum which was interesting.
There are shops you might enjoy also.

The real charm if the city is the ambiance on a very Medieval walled city.

Maryanne is right about the two highlights being the Criminal Museum and the Nightwatchman tour.

Two other things most tourists pay attention to are the Kathy Wolfhart Christmas store and a walk aroun the town wall.

The church has some fabulous wood carved altars and such and then there is the iconic chug-a-lug tribute to a mythical town mayor and the sneeballs (pastry).

Yep, sneeballs are nasty!

The highlight for us was walking on the medieval walls and seeing the town from this perspective.

Check out the views into the valley just outside the walls.
We enjoyed the night watchman's tour also.

Go to "Hell" for a great meal with interesting atmosphere.

Schneeballs and marzipan - possibly the only two horrible foods in Germany. But they both look real purdy.

Yes, stay away from the Schneeballs!

I stayed at Burg Hotel, a lovely small hotel nestled into the old walled part of the city. Loved St. Jakob's church and the wonderful wood work. Nighwatchman's tour was fun.

Just walk around the city and you will be delighted.

I got tired of the tourist shops where you could find the very same Christmas stuff right here in Texas. (But then again, Christmas in Texas is BIG, so maybe your hometown doesn't have the selection we have.)

It was good to walk around once the tour buses left around 3:00 ish.

Loved the Burg Hotel. About 150 euro/night a couple years ago, for a small suite. Nice breakfast room overlooks a very pretty hilled area. Excellent service and comfy beds.

In addition to a walking tour of the city and the gardens, I liked the Reichstadt Museum for its 19th century paintings of Rothenburg. Take a camera; photo opportunities abound.

For simple but good food, we liked the Gasthaus Greifen.

We stayed at this hotel for 3 nights in Spring 2004, it's a beautiful place. And we had good meals both at the hotel and the Weinstube above. Wish I was going back!

Phillyboy, we are staying at the Eisenhut for 112$ a night with bkfst...what a deal! Thanks for the info on the restaurant.

Hi,

We stayed 2 nights in Rothenburg two years ago. While Rothenburg is "touristy", it's simply beautiful. Especially early am and from the late afternoon on. Highlights for us were the Nightwatchmans Tour (just be in the main square at 8pm), St. Jacobs Church (especially Tilmann Riemenschneiders 500 yr. old wood carved alter, which is up a few steps at the REAR of the church), Crime and Punishment Museum and last but not least... simply walking the town and a walk along part of the wall.

Judy - Wow, $112 per night is fantastic for this gorgeous hotel. I'm thinking we paid around $200 per night almost 5 years ago, and breakfast was not included if I remember correctly.

I guess you're the beneficiary of one of the drastic measures that some in the travel industry are taking too attract people. I'm sure you will love it.

I was just there a four months ago.

you have been given good advice here.

I agree,..... walk the city wall all the way around...and do the Nightwatchman tour.

If you can , stay at the Eisenhut Hotel....it is about 150 feet from the main town square.

This is where I stayed and the location could not have been better.

pja1 's pictures are nice and gives you a flavour of how quaint the place is.

You can just walk around this picture post card town.

This is what a German country should look like.

We have been to Rothenburg probably a half dozen times and never tire of it. We've spent as much as several days and as few as several hours just wandering around.

One of our favorite places is the Burg Garten (city garden), at the end of Herrengasse. It's a (normally) peaceful place even when the streets are full of tourists.

I always suggest that people venture out from the main town hall area.

The nightwatchman's tour, crime and punishment museum, walking the walls and just wandering around were our main activities. We were there in October and the traffic was pretty light which was nice. I had been once before in September. That wasn't too bad in the evening either.
