Read my posting today (10:35 a.m.): Venice to Rome (or reverse) for 15 or 30 Euros. You're looking at an absolute minimum 9 hours on the train, round trip. By air, considering the expense and all the time wasted getting to and from both airports, you're looking at a mimimum of six hours commute. I think that the answer to your question is pretty obvious.

Kyle - The only way to do it and give yourself a full day in Venice would probably be to travel one way (- or both) overnight by train.

DO NOT do Venice as a side trip. This is one of the grandest cities in the world. It merits at least three days, but five would be better.
See Venice in all its glory before it sinks. There is no place like it. Don't cheat yourself.
