Rome to Positano travel (?)

I'm going on my honeymoon to Rome next month and want to check out the Amalfi coast. Problem is, we'll only have two nights to spend in Positano. And we won't have a car.

Is it feasible to travel from Rome to Positano in one day without being exhausted upon arrivel? I'm guessing we'll take the train to Naples and then the ferry to Capri and on to Positano. The bus route is another option into Positano.

Has anyone done this trip? What's your advice?

Thanks in advance to any who can help!

Jim

Looks like the train from Rome to Naples (about 2 hours), another train to Sorrento (1 hour), and the Blue Bus to Positano (30 minutes).

If you need this info - hope it helps.

If you have better ideas, I'd love to hear them.

Jim

Hello Jim,

Rome-Capri-Positano is quite doable and not too tiring, but you'd need to make an early start to give yourselves a few hours to enjoy Capri.

There are departures from Capri to Positano at 16.25, 17.15, 17.35, and 18.45 according to the current timetables.
It may be advisable to book in advance as these services can be very busy in high season.

Let me know if I can be of more help ...

Steve
Hi,

I just got back from a 3 1/2 week vacation in Italy. You can go from Rome to Naples and then take the ferry to Capri, spend the day and then take the ferry to Positano. The ferry from Capri to Positano left at 4:25 p.m. You might need to make reservations for the ferry to Positano, as it gets filled very quickly. The other observation is that you might skip Capri and just concentrate on the Amalfi coast. We went Capri for the day and it was wall to wall people everywhere. It is a beautiful island, but it was modded and therefore, for me, not pleasant. The bus goes between Positano and Amalfi and that is a wonderful ride. The ferry also connects these two villages. The town of Revello, was wonderful. There are concert at night, not as crowded, the views spectacular. If you do not like crowds, I would rethink Capri. You will have a wonderful time.

Sue

Just back from Positano -- I would suggest you stay in town to avoid a lot of walking in the short time you have. You will have more fun in Positano if you are closer to the action. Try the Murat, Poseidon or one of the others that is close.
The boat to Capri arrives and departs right from the beach in Positano.

Just a thought, but since you only have 2 nights, and it is a honeymoon, I'd suggest Capri for those two nights (easier to get to, and I'd think more romantic.)

I just found out about the hydrofoil from Naples to Positano direct - 45 minutes. This is looking like the most attractive option right now.

Thanks for everyone's input.

Jim

Jim:

For a 2-night visit, I'd chose one; either Capri or Positano. And personally I think there's very few spots in Italy that rival the unique geographical charm of Positano.

HOWEVER, you'll have to have a bit of luck (make sure you tell them it's your HONEYMOON) when trying to find accommadations in Positano on such short notice --- you did say that you're going to Italy next month ???

Getting there & staying there without a car isn't a problem. Visited Positano twice in past few years, and on both occassions got there from Rome via the train to Napoli (make sure you go on a EuroStar train)---then Circumvesuviana to Sorrento---finally SITA bus to Positano. In your circumstance the hydrofoil from Naples sounds like the way to go (oh, but you miss that memorable final 15 minutes on the bus as it climbs up the narrow road along coastline into Positano!).

Buon Viaggio!
