Rome to Positano - driving directions. Mapquest?
Hello all,
First I'd like to mention that I did a search on this topic and found some posts, but none that dealt specifically to Positano.
I will be driving from Rome to Positano next month on our trip to Italy. I got some driving directions on mapquest, but once I get to Naples, they are pretty hard to follow. I would like any and all reccomendations on routes to take and the like.
What would be the most scenic for coast? and for country? How to get to positano?
Thanks for all your help, and my apologies if this post is even the slightest bit redundant.

Have you tried www.viamichelin.com? I have found it is more helpful than mapquest for non-US directions.

Spell, do you have a hotel booked in Positano? On our trips to Italy, I email the hotel in advance and ask for directions from whatever city we'll be coming from (e.g., Rome to San Gimignano on our last trip). They give concise, accurate directions. If you ask them for the scenic route/quickest route, etc, they'll oblige.
We're driving from Rome to Positano, too (this fall), so post when you get back and let us know what route worked for you!

Everyone, thank you for your help. I do have a hotel in Positano booked and will ask them. I just wanted to see if anyone else had recommendations also.
I will report back what way worked for me. We are driving, because there will be four of us with luggage, and we just feel it will be easier. One in our group feels a bit better about avoiding mass transit also....

It's a nice drive, I've done it many times, don't worry.
Just stay on the autostrada and try to circle around Naples and then head for the signs directing Pompeii then Sorrento. You will exit the autostrada near Torre Annunziata and get on a smaller road that hugs the coast, keep following signs for Sorrento and pass Castellamare, Vico Equense, Meta, Piano and at St. Agnello all along the coast. There are many shortcuts over the mountains but I think you should take the cutoff just before Sorrento town at St. Agnello and start heading towards Positano. If you miss it just go into Sorrento and follow other signs.
Remember that sometimes just the local towns are posted for directions so have a detailed map handy. It is not scarey and you will have places to stop and check a map and catch the views. Don't stress over it, it is wonderful.
The very first time I went to Sorrento I was in the back seat of a tiny car driven my a British madman (friend), of the three of us none of us had been there and I did a pretty good job of navigating, but trying to get him to follow my directions as we careened at breakneck speed was a different story.
Have fun.
