Car rentals in Italy among the most expensive in Western Europe.

Drop charge for leaving an Italian car in France (I presume?) is likely to be outrageous.

Rail fare should be more or less $100 2nd class per adult. Check.

A couple of calls to AutoEurope and Kemwell ought to give you a good idea of car cost. Add gas, tolls, possible parking.

For many trips I'd guess car is a bit, or more, cheaper for three than the train. On this one I'm not so sure. That's aside from the ease of sitting back and relaxing on the train, or possibly taking an overnight train to save a day of sightseeing, and not considering any discomfort you may find in driving in Europe.

Ed

I have posted this so many times before, it must sound like a broken record, but the best way to get from Rome to Paris is www.virgin-express.com to Brussels and then train to Paris. And besides, Belgium is quite worthy of a stop on its own - - whether a few hours or much longer.

Best wishes,

Rex

Postscript: If this forum had an easier way to locate and direct readers to a specific (previous) posting by a unique identifier (timestamp), it would not be necessary to repeat information so tediously. This is my new crusade, and I am thinking about adding this postscript (when applicable) to every new reply I make here. If you agree with me, then please write to Danny Mangin or David Downing - - [email protected] - - and encourage them to move forward with this improvement (and any others they have up their sleeves) to this best-on-the-web travel forum!
Rex, you should certainly feel free to beat as many horses as you wish.

You might, however, consider sending one (or as many as you'd like if you think might makes right)note to Danny with your suggestion, instead of adding this to all your responses.

The risk may be that after a few repetitions frequent readers of the forum will ignore all you say since such rote spoutings become tiresome quickly. I'd guess if I see one more I'll turn you off. Since you have a lot to offer from time to time, that would be a real shame, and a loss to the forum, occasional pomposity notwithstanding.
