Rome to Orvieto to Assisi to ?

Thanks for all the advice so far. I am actually enjoying planning this trip. Ideas for places to stay in Assisi?
Where should we go after that? Cortona..Marciano...over toward Siena? After that we are off to the week stay in the villa near Tarvenella. We'll do day trips from there..and relax and enjoy.

The Hotel Umbra is a centrally located three-star, some of whose rooms have lovely views. It has a restaurant with an outdoor terrace in good weather. Most people seem to like the restaurant; I did not. I preferred the less expensive but more traditional Pallotta a few steps away.

Siena is certainly a possibility; I haven't a map in front of me, so I don't know how it lies in relation to Assisi but I think it's more or less just south of Tavarnelle (note correct spelling).

When are you going? if you are going off high season, why not play it by ear? The red Michelin guide/michelin web-site shows where all the hotels are, and it might by fun to do it face to face rather than having booked everything. You can check up beforehand which ones you fancy the look of and how much they cost. I'm all for a bit of spontenaity [though I can't spell it!]

So we may assume you have a car?

There are lots of nice little towns in Umbria: Spello, Todi, Gubbio. And Perugia is supposed to be worth working your way through the modern city into the Centro Storico. An Italian told me the little town of Corciano is very nice.

Or you could move west to central/southern Tuscany: Siena, San Gimagano, Montalcino, Pienza, Montepulciano, San Quirico, etc.

In Umbria we stayed at the Relais il Canalicchio www.relaisilcanalicchio.it. It's a small town converted into a resort hotel, surrounded by green countryside but very well located for driving around Umbria.
