Rome to Basil: by rail or air?

My wife and I are trying to decide the "best" transportation from Rome to Basil. It is our first trip (only 17 nights!)to Europe and this particular link (4 days into the trip)will be at the end of our first leg. I was thinking a Monday evening sleeper train would be relatively inexpensive and pretty cool too, but the other option would be a cheap jet Tuesday AM. Decisions, decisions, decisions!!!

Or even Basel?

If you've slept on a train before, then I say go for it. But if you haven't and find it doesn't suit you, the cost of the experiment may be excessive. If you don't sleep well, your next day will be ruined.

OK, Basel, B-A-S-E-L it is! Anyway, so I'm getting from you all that my romantic notion of an overnight choo-choo ride from Italy to Switzerland may not be quite what I imagine. FYI and by the way, my only experience on any kind of train is BART in the SF bay area. Cant sleep on THAT noisy thing, but I did sleep like a baby on a cruise ship once.
