Rome to Amalfi

Can you please recommend the best way from Rome to Amalfi, should we go by train to Naples then bus or ferry to Amalfi or is it better to go by train to alerno then ferry to Amalfi. Also would a car be a good bet, can anyone recommend anyone and give us an idea of price We have 3 boys, 13, 11, 7 who will proably be worn out after 3 days in Rome so am hoping for some good suggestions.

Hi B,

I think the best way, especially with the boys, is train to Salerno and ferry to Amalfi.

Train schedules are at www.trenitalia.com

For Ferry schedules Positano – Amalfi - Salerno (P.zza della Concordia):

>Also would a car be a good bet, ...
Usually, no.
When will you be going?

I would strongly suggest taking a bus to Amalfi. It is one of the most beautiful areas of Italy. You wouldnt want to drive the Amalfi coast unless you always wanted to be a race car driver.
Its breathtaking but not a good time if you are doing the driving. All your attention will be on the cars whipping around you and not on the amazing view.
Enjoy the beautiful view and let the expert drivers do the driving.

You wont appreciate the skill of those drivers until you see it for yourself.
Are you planning to stay in that area? Or are you just doing a day trip?

You can take the train from Rome to Sorrento then a bus ride to see the area's around Amalfi..dont miss Ravello and Postiano.
We stayed in Sorrento and took a tour on the boat around Capri Postiano etc I think it was a 5hr or 7 hr cruise. Very relaxing. It was beautiful. Next day we took a bus to the Amalfi coast and up to Ravello.
Unless you are staying in Naples or flying home from Naples you dont need to stop there to catch a train or bus to the Amalfi coast. I guess a Ferry Boat would be a nice ride around the coast also. On our boat they sold sandwiches but I think you also could bring your own food it would be cheaper for a family of 5.
You will have a memorable trip...have fun.

My family of 7 is taking the train to Naples and then having a private driver pick us up and drive us to Positano.

There are 2 ways by train: (1) Rome to Salerno, then back to Amalfi by boat and bus, and (2)Rome to Naples, switch (within Naples Centrali station) to the commuter train to Sorrento, then switch to bus from Sorrento to Amalfi. I agree that via Salerno is better, and forget the car.
