Help! We are driving an Avis rental car into Rome and drop off point is at 38 Via Sardegna. I have printed driving directions from Michelin, MapQuest and Maporama and all three are different!!! Which site should I trust?

I would plot all three sets of directions on a map and see which ones look easier for you to follow (there are probably many different ways to get to your destination.) Keep the others with you just in case the traffic steers you in a different direction than you intend.

We found different sites also sometimes gave us different directions to follow when we drove in Italy last summer so I would usually try to choose whichever ones seemed simpler to follow.

I have found it much easier to follow all return rental car signs at the airport of all bigger cities in Europe and then train or take a bus into the main area. In Rome the trains go right to the center.

BTW-that's after getting lost 2-3 times for an hour or more that I now return at airports the easy way.

Ira, how do you know if allthree are correct if you don't know FROM WHERE the person is driving?

Well, of course, you could go to the Rome airport but I think it's awfully nice to be able to drop off your luggage at your hotel and return your car to a place that is, hopefully, nearby.

For me, it would depend on how comfortable you will be driving by then and if you will have someone to help you navigate.

You need to get a map of Rome and chart the route on it. As a general rule, we've had good results with Michelin.

I have found after much experimentation that www.mappy.com never steers me wrong.

That said, Via Michelin is reliable. I'd toss the Mapquest directions out the window. Mapquest can't even get me from my home in the States to my local supermarket. Never heard of Maporama, so can't speak to that.

I rented a car in Rome and returned it to the Rome location with no incident, and it was a heck of a lot easier FOR ME than going all the way out to Fiumicino when I was arriving on the A1 from the north. As with the stock market, your results may vary.

I'm in NYC and frequently rent a car 5 blocks from home in Manhattan. Other than the somewhat higher price of renting in the city here than at the airport, I'd be crazy to do it the other way.

I would trust Michelin before Mapquest or other online mapping things. I work at a hotel which Mapquest just cannot get right in their directions. I'd never want to trust them in a situation like that!
