I'm traveling to Tuscany in September in a party of 5. We're staying near Arezzo and we'd like to do a day trip to Rome. In order to save a bit of cash, we're hoping to go by car as far as the outskirts of Rome, then park up and do the city section by train.
Does any one know of a good train station that is just off the A1 on the outskirts of Rome and has good parking?

Kert, I did the same thing when I was staying in Tuscany. I parked at the Fiumincino airport long term parking and took a cab into town, but you could take the train in from the airport too.

Fiumincino airport seems a bit of a trek. At the moment I'm looking at Orte. Has anyone used this station? If so is there plenty of parking?

I'm surprised that there haven't been more answers to this question because it's a good one and so I'm bringing it back to the top.

How about the idea of getting much closer than Orte, namely to the end of the B Metro line at Rebibbia, or at the Tiburtina stop, for instance? Or at the Aeroporto dell Urbe?

Most all cities, large and small, have 'Park-and-Ride' - where are they for Rome?

Thanks for your input Tuckh. Yes, I'd have expected a bit more feedback on this. From a cost perspective, parking at one of the Metro stations would be great.

This is from the Enjoy Rome site and it's what we were looking for...

"Another option is the parcheggi di scambio, parking lots located near Metro stations a bit further away from the historical center of Rome (like Anagnina and Cinecittà on Line A, or Ponte Mammolo on Line B. From there, you can simply take the Metro into the center. At € 1.55 per day, the parking is very economical, but the lots are unattended."

TuckH - Another good place to locate parking is www.mappy.com Select map not directions and put Rome as the city. When the map pops up on the right hand side there will be a list called practical info. Click on parking and all the parking sites will pop up numbered. Underneath the map all the parking will be listed with names,addresses and phone numbers. You can zoom in on certain areas if you want.
