Rome or Milan airport?

We will be in Florence and will need to get a Delta flight back to the US. Since Delta doesn't fly out of Florence we will need to take the train to either Rome or Milan. Does anyone know if one airport is easier to get to by train? and how long the train ride is?

It is our first venture to Italy and very much approeciate any advice. Thanks so nuch.

I submit it's roughly a toss of the coin. When is the flight? Florence-Rome is a shorter train trip, but Rome Termini-Fiumicino is a slightly longer, more expensive ride (for example by cab) than Venice Mestre-Marco Polo.

Personally, I would move to the city of your choice the night before (and see it - - even if it's only 7 pm to bedtime).

Best wishes,

Rex
Hello Ellie,

From Florence, Rome (FCO) is a much better option than Milan.
There's a difference of 2 hours+ journey time.

Hope this helps ...

Steve
Yikes. I see now that I didnt pay attention to the original question. I guess I contrasted Rome with Venice because Delta flies non-stop from there (also - - but only to JFK, perhaps?)

Anyhow, I agree with Steve. Milan is a poorer choice on three counts. Further from Florence by train; further from train station to airport, and less interesting place to spend an evening before.
Concur that your best option of the two would be to depart out of Rome's airport.

On the eve before you leave, take eurostar train down to Rome (takes 1 1/2 hrs) --- try to get there around 3:30 / 4 pm; have a few hours to wander around, maybe go to St. Peter's or hang out at Piazza Navona. Have a leisurely dinner. And then you can fly out next morning.

This is the most pertinent question I've seen posted on this board in quite some time!
