Rome Opera

I will be in Rome the last week in Sept. I would love to go to the opera. I did find a good site, but it was mostly in Italian. How do I find out what will be performed while I am there, where is the opera house located and what is the cost of tickets. Do I need to buy tickets beforehand, or can I buy tickets at the door. And, last, but not least, what is the usual attire. Thanks for your help.

barb, there was a thread on this recently. Try searching on "Rome Opera" and see what comes up. Also, two sites that can help answer your questions. http://www.selectitaly.com and http://www.leonidaniele.it both are in English. the opera house is located relatively near Termini. I stayed at the Aberdeen Hotel and it was on the same street as the opera house, about 2 blocks away. The hotel offered to get tickets for me as it was so close. Other hotels may offer the same service, perhaps for a price. But, you certainly can order them on-line in advance of your trip.

Thanks Claire,

How important is getting good seats. Is the cost for "good" seats a lot more, and did you need to get "dressed up"?

You'll see the gamut re: dress, but no need for formal wear at all. Simple dark colored dress or suit will do it. You'll notice that the Italians, even when dressing casually, look pretty elegant in a simple way. They tend to stick to solid dark colors. In general, the more expensive your seats, the more dressed up you get, but no one is likely to do ball gowns & sequined cocktail suits! Just be comfortable.

I recall there were a wide range of ticket prices. Just try to avoid being at the very farthest back in the top tier, or under an overhang. Have fun!

Thanks Steve,

That's disappointing, I was looking forward to it. Does anyone know of any places that have good jazz in the P. Navona, di Fiori area?

I suggest you re-post this with a 'Jazz in Rome' heading, Barb.

P.S. Did you see on the other recent 'Opera in Rome' thread that someone mentioned a restaurant where opera singers perform? Don't know if that might be of interest ...

Steve
