I recently saw a REAL BUMMER of a movie on AMC Cable. The name was "Rome Adventure", or something like that. It starred Suzanne Pleschette and some clown named Troy Donahue. The movie was absolutely TERRIBLE, but the scenes of Rome and Lake Garda and the Italian Alps made it absolutely worth watching. It was more of a travelogue than it was a movie.

One film that I love is Roberto Rosselini's Rome Open City (Roma Citta Aperta). It is, however, anything but an entertaining travelogue -- it's a neorealist classic about Rome under the Nazi occupation, with an absolutely incredible performance by Anna Magnani.

A number of the neorealist films were set in Rome, including The Bicycle Thief (Ladri di Biciclette), directed by Vittorio De Sica. If you see that one, you might want to check out the comedy hommage The Icicle Thief (Ladri di Saponette) by Maurizio Nichetti.

Aside from the neorealists, there's Fellini's La Dolce Vita -- lots of Rome in that one.

For sheer entertainment, I agree with Tammy, Roman Holiday is a delight.

"Roman Holiday" is my favorite, but "Three Coins in the Fountain" has become more fascinating than ever, for it shows off Rome and environs from a 1950s viewpoint, when travel there was exotic and especially exciting. Much of it seems like a travelogue with a plot but when I saw it on TV the other night, Rome never seemed so magical.

Dittos for La Dolce Vita and Roman Holiday. First time my mom and I went to Rome together we totally camped it up at Fontana di Trevi, a la Anita Ekberg in Dolce Vita. Fontana di Trevi, in particular, is always a nutty scene so you'll have lots of fun out there.

Thanks!
