Rome Itinerary
Thanks to all of you, we've planned our Italy honeymoon itinerary. We ended up with four full days to spend in Rome at the end of our honeymoon, which will be late June/early July.
I'd love suggestions of how you would spend four days in Rome. Some info about us: we don't want to spend all our time in museums, but we do like to see art and architecture as part of visiting a place. We love food! We are Catholic, so visiting the Vatican is a must for us. We will be there Sunday through Wednesday, so we had hoped to attend a mass in St. Peters and also to attend the pope's blessing if he will be there then. I love to shop and will be wanting to do last minute purchases in Rome. We're staying at the Residenza Canali ai Coronari on Via Dei Coronari.
We had thought of doing the Enjoy Rome's nighttime tour to get an ancient Rome overview, without doing it in quite so much heat.
Any suggestions? Comments?

HI
If you click at the top of this screen on Destinations you will find fodors's suggestions for how to spend time in Rome. frommers.com also has suggested itineraries.
I'd suggest a walking tour company, my recommendation is for Scala Reale but there are several. Scala Reale has you sign up for one or more of their 4-hour tours, and that includes a 2-hour Orientation Hike or Stroll (your choice) that gives a good orientation. I personally get oriented better on foot than I do while riding in a bus or car.
The Pope's public audience is on Wednesdays around mid-day. You could visit the Vatican Museums and St Peter's that same day, if you go on your own, or try to schedule your guided tour for 1pm.
On another day I'd plan a visit to the Colosseum and Roman Forum. If you don't use a guided tour, rent the audio guide so you know what you're looking at.
If you want to pick one museum, I think the Borghese is one of the greatest anywhere. Advance reservations recommended--you will be reserving a two-hour time slot, after two hours you have to leave.
I have a long file on Rome; if you'd like to see it, email me at

I second the Borghese. We're not big museum people either, but this was just right. It's art in it's "natural habitat," as the artists were commissioned to create their pieces specifically for this villa. Since they limit the number of people in the museum at one time, it's never crowded. Just be sure to make reservations in advance.
Don't skip over Bernini's "Apollo and Dafne" sculpture. I spent about half and hour circling it with my jaw on the floor.

Something I had planned for us last summer, but did not do , due to the mid 90s temps was a boat trip on the Tevere.
There is a company: www.battellidiroma.it
They offer a few different trips , one is a tour of the bridges on the river.
I just think it would be a fun way to see the city.
We are going in late April,
so definitely will do it this time!
