Hi Again,
Susan, thanks for your view on the evening bus tour. I wasn't sure that it was safe to go out at night by ourselves, with all the talk about pick pockets, etc.
Tuscanlifeedit, thanks for letting us know about St Mark's Basilica and needing reservations. Can I do it online or should I ask our hotel to reserve? Also, I really appreciate your restaurant advice. It's good to have some economical choices sprinkled in with all the pricey ones! Fodorites are wonderful and I am very grateful for your help!

Mairseydotes I bet you're excited! I leave for Venice on the 8th and just can't wait. What dates are you in Venice? I wish I hadn't lost my FODORS PIN in the snow in Austria a couple of years ago, I used to wear it all the time in the hope that I would run into another fodorite.
We did an Accidental Tourist wine tasting tour from Florence and loved it, and if I'm not mistaken they do have evening walks that include dinner or drinks.

Walking around Rome at night is not a problem, there'll be lots of others strolling too. Pickpockets can only pick pockets that are pickable so make sure your pockets are unpickable
Have a wonderful trip.

Hi Mischka!
We will be in Venice from the 12-14th (3 days). I have also signed up for the Accidental Tourist Cooking Class in Tuscany that includes a winery tour beforehand.
We plan to carry all our important stuff under our clothing, so hopefully, no pickpockets!
Have a wonderful time in a wonderful country!

mairseydotes,
On two nights we walked over to the Colosseum area and took pictures after 10pm, of the colosseum by night.
Two women. And older ones at that. We both were using expensive cameras with zoom lenses. Not one person bothered us on the 3 nights we spent there.
Granted, on buses, day or night, guard your purses etc. In our Sistine tour, one of our group had her purse slashed and her camera taken out while on a bus ride during the DAY.
Don't hang your purse over you on the street side, they say, as people can snatch and run or ride more easily that way.
I had my purse on my belt. Best when travelling anywhere not to have obviously expensive jewelry hanging about either.
But in central Rome, there was never a hint of a problem for us at night.
Wow, just a matter of DAYS for you now.
Have a wonderful time!
