Rome Day Trips?

My husband and I are going to Italy in 2 weeks. We will spend three nights in Rome, our first time there. I know there's plenty to see in Rome, but can anyone please tell me what the best day trips from Rome are, how long they take, and if we can take a bus or train to get there? Thanks much!

With only 3 days in Rome, you should probably spend all your time in the city! In three days, you'll barely touch all the sights in Rome. I know this doesn't answer your question, but perhaps it'll convince you! <BR>

I agree with Howard. There is more than enough to keep you running for 3 days. However, if you are determined, I would suggest Ostia Antica, Rome's ancient seaport. (We planned to take a day trip there during our week-long stay in Rome this summer, but ultimately didn't want to give up a day in the city.) I think you will find details about getting there in any good guidebook. Have a great trip.

I'm stunned that on a visit to Rome with only 2 full days you'd even think of a day trip. There's enough _prime_ (important and enjoyable) sites for a couple of weeks. <BR> <BR>A suggestion for the top sights to visit and walks/tours that include _skimming_ them in just _three_ days is at http://twenj.com/romesights.htm <BR> <BR>If you're still interested in leaving the city for one of your two days, see http://twenj.com/romesightsexcurse.htm

<BR>Jessica....please, please, please spend those few days in Rome. You won't be sorry. If it's at all possible, can you squeeze in even one more day? There's so much to see and experience and you'll want to stay even longer! Have a wonderful trip.

I agree that you should stay in Rome. BUT if you insist on taking a day trip, Florence is do-able. I was there last year for a week and took the train to Florence. It was probably a little more than 90 mins from Rome to Florence and we had all day for shopping in that fabulous market, the Duomo and Uffizi. I loved it but the short trip definitely whet my appetite for more.
