ROME CATACOMBS?!?! WHERE?

I will be travelling to Rome in September and I have heard that you should visit the catacombs. I've looked into them and there are more than 1 in Rome.

Which would be the best one to visit? I want to see skeletons and creepy stuff, so which one should I visit?

You would be better off at the Capuchin Crypts on Via Veneto near Piazza Barberini, if you want to see skeletons..

I've only been to one set of catacombs - they are of historical interest, no bones or skeletons, unlike those in Paris. You could visit the Cappuccin Crypt in a church in Rome near the Borghese gardens area. Please know that these are not 'creepy theme parks' - they are like burial grounds where one should be respectful, not all shrieking and cringing.

The Cappuchin Crypts are not near the Borghese but on Piazza Barberini in a church. They were interesting if not a bit macabre--chandeliers made of bones are hanging overhead. No photos are allowed but they sell postcards and a small fee is required for admission. You can see it in about 30 minutes.

The crypt is in Santa Maria della Concezione, on the right side of Via Veneto as you enter it from Piazza Barberini.

We visited the San Callisto catacombs...no bones, but it was a nice tour led by a knowlegable priest...took the city bus there and back. (city bus included in your Metro pass)... You go up the Appian Way to get to the catacombs which is lovely area and very different from city centre..Cost of the visit was 5E each.

prior to our trip, we applied online to the vatican for the "new excavation" site tour. it was awesome. the skeletons were still halfway in the dirt & half excavated. it was extremely interesting. excavated artifacts; ancient caskets, etc.

I just went to the Catacombs in July but no bones - more historical. I have a good book on them - that lists all the Catacombs in Rome - but it does not list any that have bones et. I went to the one on Via Appia Antica.

"The Cappuchin Crypts are not near the Borghese but on Piazza Barberini"

hmmm. isn't that about 400 meters from Villa Borghese? I only meant in relative terms as compared to the catacombs, which are located outside of Rome 'proper'...

Pago - I was really concerned about that - as I do NOT. The one we went to was really not that bad... and it was nice and cool a beat from the heat of July!
