Rome Catacombs getting there and worth it?
We land in Rome on a Sunday and have a few hours to kill before settling into rental apartment. After we drop our bags, we will be off doing something and have chosen the catacombs -- the other sights are scheduled for later in the week.
What is the easiest way to get to the catacombs? Can we walk there from the Pantheon area? Which is the best one to visit? Two adults and two teens. If we take a cab, what is a typical rate from the Pantheon area to the Catacombs? Thanks!

There's the Archeobus. It's a Hop-on Hop-off for archeological sights in Rome: www.trambusopen.com/index.cfm?Id=archeo. Certainly not easier than a cab, except, maybe for getting back. However, the tickets are good for 24 hours. Maybe you can use it again the next day.

They are not walkable.
San Calisto, San Sebastian etc are south of Rome. We rented a car. We just saw San Calisto but it was quite large. Seems too far for a taxi to want to go. There is a bus from St. John Lateran (Giovanni Laterano), I believe.
There is also a smaller but well-known one called the Catacombs of Priscilla in the north part of Rome. We did take a taxi to this one on another trip. If you choose this one, ask the sisters before you leave how to get to the taxi stand at the Piazza Vescovio.

You won't be able to take a cab on Sunday as the Via Appia Antica is closed to traffic except for buses and bikes. You can catch a bus at either San Giovanni Laterano or near the Circus Maximus. However, the buses out to the catacombs do not run very frequently and run even LESS frequently on Sundays. Here is an article that describes how to get there: http://www.reidsguides.com/destinati...ppian_way.html

We took the archeobus in February 2007. At that time of year it wasn't very crowded but I have read it can be sometimes. It does take you farther down the Appian Way and over to some of the major aqueducts as well as to the catacombs. We caught it near the Santa Maria in Cosmedin which is a fairly short walk from the Pantheon
Beyond the catacombs (easy walking distance) is the tomb of
Tomb of Cecilia Metella. You can buy a ticket that is good for both the tomb and the Baths of Caracalla near the Circus Maximus which are very impressive.
