Rome: Capitoline She-Wolf Statue Dated to 13C

It *was* considered one of the most famous pieces in the Capitoline Museums (and my personal favorite ).

 So it's not a ~5C/6C-BC bronze statue but a ~1200AD statue.

There were always some questions and in '06 the casting technique was doubted publicly but now hi-tech tests seem to show it's a Medieval statue.

This is from Nov'06, where I mentioned what was believed then by some to be lightning damage on the statue which placed it on the Capitoline Hill in 65BC.

Wouldn't it be funny if the two boys -- Baroque (??) era additions -- turned out to be 6th C BC original figures????

Yes, that would be a good twist.
The original is a later addition and the later addition is the original.

Hi Walter,
Thanks for the news. I won't tell my sister--she would be very disappointed.

It's now officially official, the statue dates to the 11th-12th C-AD with 95.4% accuracy.

Still a nice piece of sculpture. And the Capitoline is still my favorite museum in Rome. Thanks for the official update, though! One of the reasons this is such a valuable discussion forum!
