Rome and Sicily
I will be traveling to Rome and Sicily in early August 2001, what is the weather like, I know about humidity as I live in Virginia.
I know not to go to places of worship without covering knees and elbows, but what type of clothing suits their weather??

I was in Rome last year in August and it was VERY hot, around 30 degrees during the day. I would suggest that you take alot of lightweight cotton items. I spent most of my time wearing long cotton skirts and palazzo pants, with fitted t-shirts and vest tops. I took a sarong with me everywhere just in case I needed to cover my shoulders somewhere!!! Sicily will be much cooler it is an island and can be quite breezey!

I was in Sicily for two weeks last September and it was hot to very hot each and every day. We had two weeks of completely blue skies without a cloud in sight. During the middle of the day, say 11am to 3pm, the sun was intense. The only relief we had was the day and night spent on Mount Etna. I'd wonder about the temperature in August. Here's a link to check out the temp averages in Palermo. The average high looks good but check out the highest recorded temps. I'm sure it was 90 and above our entire trip...made for some great swimming.
http://www.weatherbase.com/weather/w...=050461&refer=

Very long ago (1972?) I spent a month in Italy in July-August. I don't remember Rome's weather specifically, but in genereal Italy, including Florence and Venice, was quite hot. I do remember that in August Agrigento was extremely hot with a blazing hot unshaded sun. I think a hat was an absolute necessity there. I remember thinking that if I ever went there again in summer I should wear nothing but very light loose white cotton clothes. I also remember that Palermo was muggy and hazy in August with some weather condition that kept the pollution hanging low. Last year Ragusa was fairly hot even in early May, so I'd guess it must be very hot in August. I think northeastern Sicily may always be a little more pleasant. In May it was fairly cool in the Nebrodi Mts. In summer it's probbly not cool, but I'd guess that it would be pleasantly warm, not extremely hot, in those mountains. On Etna, of, course, it would be cold!
