Rome-Amalfi Day Trip
Can a day trip from Rome to Amalfi be done enjoyably? If so, how? I am looking at taking the train from Rome. Should I get off at Naples, take the circumvesuvio to Sorrento and then the bus? Or should I take the train all the way to Salerno and then take the bus back and forth? If you could pick only one town to get off the bus and see, which would it be? Second choice?

It really is too far and not direct. You have to either take a buse or car from Naples or Sorrento. I think your travel time round trip would be about 6-8 hours. I can't pick one town... Positano is very beautiful and unique, but I also love Ravello. I would leave the coast for the next trip.

Personally speaking I wouldn't do it, it's too much of a hassle, but if you really want to do it, prepare for a very early start. Take the earliest train from Rome to Salerno, and from there a bus to Amalfi which takes about 1 hour. This is what I would do. For train schedules check www.trenitalia.com

Hi pam,
It will be a very looooooooooooong day.
I would train to either Salerno or Sorrento, take the bus to the other city and return to Rome from there.

Ravello for the views or Positano for the shopping.
