Rome - 24 hours- what area to stay
We are going to Rome for one day and then heading out for the rest of our trip. We have been there before and saw Vatican, the Colosseum and the Forum and will not visit again. This short visit we want to do a lot of walking. In what area/neighborhood do you suggest we stay to get a good tourist taste of Rome.
Thank you

Do you want to walk mainly in the city or on the outskirts. Near Termini for the city and station, Ostia Antica is better walking and you could stay near the stations that lead there or even on the coast.
Via Appia https://romesite.com/via-appia-antica.html would take a bit more thinking, let us know what the objective is.

For something a bit different, maybe near Piramide/Ostiense? Ostiense is the third-most important railway station, with direct trains to/from the airport. Piramide is a metro stop a very short hop away from Termini. Testaccio (the neighbourhood immediately to the west of Piramide) is interesting and pleasant to walk around, and the Testaccio hill (an ancient Roman trash heap) Piramide Cestia (Nubian-style ancient Roman pyramid) and Non-Catholic cemetery are right there. You can also take a short tram ride to Trastevere and walk around there, or walk up the Aventino hill. The former slaughterhouse and the area south of Ostiense and the railway have lots of hip and alternative spots (think street art, live music, trendy eateries, post-industrial stuff). Oh, and Eataly is right next to Ostiense and well worth a visit if you don’t have one in your own city.
Trastevere itself could be a good option to stay at. Very walkable and great to explore, on the tram line from Trastevere station (not in Trastevere itself, also has direct trains to the airport), right across the river from the core of the historic centre. The only issue is that it takes a bit longer to get to Termini, if you’re taking a train form there when you leave.
Otherwise, look in the city centre close to a metro station (like Spagna, Barberini, Flaminio, or even in Prati near Lepanto)
Close to Termini would be my least favourite option, although it’s not that bad, really, especially for only one night.

Many excellent suggestions above. Decide if there is anything particular you want to see.
For example, the Centrale Montemartini art gallery in a converted powerhouse and the papal basilica of San Paolo fuore le mura could tip the balance in favour of Ostiense. I have to say the market and rest of the neighbourhood did not seem that character-full.
if interested in the Villa Borghese art or the National Museum at Palazzo Massimo, you could stay close to the Termini station. A one-night stay at Hotel Diocleziano, when we were in a similar situation to yours, was just the ticket.
Monti, for us, was not only handy to great restaurants but also San Pietro in Vincoli (Michelangelo’s Moses) and the fabulous Domus Aurea.
