Romantic Road: Germany

Ive posted a few questions regarding a trip to munich in a few weeks.
Our big question is what we can see driving in 2 days. My boyfriend wants to see Neuschwanstein...but ive read in these forums it's best to just drive past it rather than bothering to look inside an unfinished castle. Im more interested in quaint villages that ive read about on romantic road. What is doable if we leave munich 8am one morning, over night somewhere, and return to munich the next evening?
Looking at roads...it looks as though we have an option to go from Munich to Fussen, Munich to Landsberg, or Munich to Friedberg. And then of course drive up the road. Which road will get us more bang for our time? We definitely dont want to rush, but a leisurely drive in and out a few villages and then back to Munich will have to suffice. Thanks!

Neuschwanstein (like any sight) is a matter of personal preference. We loved it.

Contrary to what some people (who must not ever have been inside or were asleep while on the tour) sometimes say, 15 rooms of the castle were finished. And we found them very interesting and certainly different from what you'll see in most castles.

Neuschwanstein was, as you probably know, Ludwig's eccentric attempt to recapture something that never actually existed: the perfect embodiment of the knightly Germanic ideal with the Wagnerian version of the ancient mythology and symbolism attached thereto.

We found it most unique and enjoyable. Certainly it is a grand sight in its natural setting.

The big problem with both Neuschwanstein and Hohenschwangau castles (and many other castles and palaces in Europe) is that you must take their escorted tour--a tour that is too short for my taste.

But if you are interested in sociology, cultural anthropology, 19th/20th Century history and such, and you are familiar with the background of Ludwig and this particular castle, then Neuschwanstein can be very interesting.

Hi,
If your boyfriend wants to see Neuschwanstein, why shouldn't he. My suggestion... take a leisurely drive to Fussen for your overnight stay. See Neuschwanstein late that afternoon or early the next morning. It's just a few miles from town. We stayed in Fussen twice, both times at the Hotel zum Hechten. We love Fussen and the zum Hecthen is a great place to stay.

You'll pass through beautiful villages and countryside on both drives.
Suggestions for places of interest along the way:

Wieskirche - an absolutely stunning church interior!

Andechs Monestary - A great place to stop for an hour or so. Another gorgeous church, plus have lunch or just a beer in one of the beer gardens.

Hope this helps.

When you go to Neuschwanstein I would suggest that you also tour Hohenschwangau. You will get a sense of what it was like for Ludwig and his family living in a castle. You can get a double ticket that covers both castles at the ticket window at the foot of the hill below the two castles.

I agree also that the drive around the area has some other charming sights like Wieskirche, Oberammergau, Linderhof, Ettal Monastary, Garmish, Mittenwald, etc.

Enjoy your trip!

If you visit N and H - you can also reserve your tickets online a head of time so you don't have to wait in line to buy them and you already know what time your tour will be. When you show up without reserved tickets, you get in line and then take the next availible tour in your prefered language - if things are busy, you may end up waiting around for your tour. It costs a couple extra euro to reserve the tickets, but the convinience was worth it, in my opinion.

I too thought that both H and N were great for the reasons mentioned by others. The story if Mad King Ludwig is really interesting.

I agree that Neuschwanstein is worth a visit, and also Hohenschwangau as a "true" old castle. Linderhof is also very beautiful.
