Don't be sorry Ann1, all of the stop signs I've seen in France, Czech Republic, Ukraine, Holland, and ??? are octagonal red signs with STOP on them. The thing is that you don't see many. Stop signs are rarely used in Europe. An octagonal red one I saw in Turkey had DUR on it, otherwise exactly like ours.

The Norwegian stop signs are in Norwegian so they say "Stopp" And they are red and octagonal. But as has been said already most signs in Europe are pictoral, but regardless it's usually a good idea to try to figure out the systems, and colors thus you can more easily figure out that a signs means something is required or forbidden or whatever...
