Merle - We have cruised from Amsterdam to Vienna, I still really enjoy the Middle Rhine - where all the castles are. I'm not sure of afternoon trips - depending upon time of year - but we've cruised from rudesheim to St. Goarsausen. Try website for KD cruises - this line seems to offer several in the area. We have taken the train out of Frankfurt to Rudesheim - on a wkend can get a very inexpensive pass for 2x for up to 5 people if my memroy is correct! Anyway - no matter which you choose I'm sure you'll enjoy. Brooks.

You stated you wanted a several hour cruise and not a trip. You can do these easily in Heidelberg on the way to Rothenburg from Frankfurt. You can also go the the Rhine area and catch a boat that will take you up and down the Rhine for a very enjoyable afternoon. You can catch these boats at towns such at Rudesheim and Assmannhausen that are not that far from Frankfurt airport. Get on and get off at various spots on the way.
Dear Mr Walter,

I like the answers you've had. Local trains run straight from Frankfurt airport to Mainz, Rudesheim, and Koblenz, from where boats sail the Rhine. The English web site of the main shipping line is http://www.k-d.com/engl/schiffstoure...#rheinundmosel, but there are other lines.

The upper Danube, too, is beautiful. For Deggendorf - Passau - Linz you can see, in English, http://www.donauschiffahrt.com/fahrplan_2002.htm
For Ardagger to Willersbach you can see, in English, http://www.mostviertel.at/dsa/

When I used Yahoo.com and entered "Heidelberg Schiffahrt" I found useful sites. They start in German, but I expect that many of them have a button to click over to English.

Please write if I can help further. Welcome to Europe.

Ben Haines, London
