Just heard on the news that rioting in Paris
is increasing.

Anyone have any news on this?

The riots are not happening in Paris. They're occuring in a suburb outside Paris.

The BBC site does a pretty good job of reporting the situation.

The rioting is in the 7th night and it has spread to other suburbs. When you have an unemployment rate among non-French youth as high as France has, you have a very incendiary environment.

I am headed to Paris this weekend. I am not concerned actually, although I think it is unfortunate. I am a little bit concerned about the Nov. 11th holiday. If this is still going on, I will be watching my back a bit during all the parades, etc. I think it is veterans day for WWI and WW2. bbonz2, you can also look at tripadvisor forum. They have a thread on this subject also.

We've just returned from 10 days in Paris...and I should be in bed!.. but the riots are in the far suburbs and will not be naywhere near to where you might be!

News said "Rioting youths shot at police and firefighters Thursday after burning car dealerships and public buses and hurling rocks at commuter trains." Traffic was halted Thursday morning on a suburban commuter line linking Paris to Charles de Gaulle airport after stone-throwing rioters attacked two trains overnight at the Le Blanc-Mesnil station. They forced a conductor from one train and broke windows, the SNCF rail authority said. A passenger was lightly injured by broken glass."

If you visit Paris you won't be going anywhere near these suburbs and you will have no idea that anything untoward is going on

My only concern is how traffice will be. If the trains are not running there will be alot of automobile traffic coming in from the airport. I assume the cabs charge extra for the time stuck in traffic.

Well... however the traffic will be - that's how it will be. There isn't much you can do about it, since the choices are 'rail' or 'road'. The shuttles are a fixed price option, if you're worried about skyrocketing taxi meters.

well, there's this from today's nytimes:

On Sunday, a gaping hole exposed a charred wooden staircase of a smoke-blackened building in the historic Marais district of Paris, where a car was set ablaze the previous night. Florent Besnard, 24, said he and a friend had just turned into the quiet Rue Dupuis when they were passed by two running youths. Within seconds, a car farther up the street was engulfed in flames, its windows popping and tires exploding as the fire spread to the building and surrounding vehicles.

Don't be freaked out.

People in Paris hesitate to visit the U.S. because they hear on the news that people constantly shoot each other in the United States. And it seems that people in the United States are afraid to visit Paris because they think they'll be surrounded by riots. Both groups are worrying unnecessarily.

Don't believe what you see on the news. Nothing is ever as bad as you are led to believe.

Good luck melissa..I hope that all this civil unrest and violence will soon be a thing of the past and that the rioters come to their senses and quit destroying the country.
I have few relatives in France,my niece lives in Paris, her apt. is near the Eiffel Tower and my sister and cousins live in Provence. I talked with my sister yesterday and so far her small village is quite calm.
She lives 30 kms from Uzes.
