Charlie, While waiting for responses to your query, check out the following websites:
www.loreleyvalley.com - an extremely "busy" site with a load of print, but a great deal of information on cruises and accommodations for Rhine Valley tours. Also look at
www.vacation-package.net for similar information and finally look at
www.neuschwanstein.net and scroll about halfway down. You'll find a load of links to the Rhine Valley on the right hand side of your screen. All of the above are in English.

A couple of years ago while traveling with Eurail Pass we spent two nights in Rudesheim, 2 nights in Cochem (on the Mosel), 2 nights in Koblenz, and 2 nights in Koln. You can hop on and off the KD boats on both the Rhine and Mosel. We traveled back and forth, stopping at other villages for lunch, the day or whatever. We are not usually into cruises, and we found this to be a wonderful way to not only see the rivers and their sites, but to experience the towns and their restaurants as well. And what a bargain, when it is included in Eurail -- along with trains back to starting points if you are in a hurry, or it gets too late for the return. email me for more specifics if you want.

Charlie: Your options are many. You can take a tour of the entire Rhine River from Basil, Switzerland all the way to Cologne and beyond. It is a lovely trip, but it doesn't necessarily give you the real flavor of the towns and castles in the Middle Rhine region.

This is the area between Weisbaden/Mainz and Koblenz, which is at the confluence of the Rhine and Mosel Rivers. It's a stretch that spans less than 100 Km, but is has the best river towns and perhaps 25 or so castles on either side.

We stayed there for a few days last May and drove the area, crossing the river by way of ferries (driving on) and visiting various towns including Rick Steve's favorite of Bacharach, the Lorelei Rock, Boppard, St. Goars (including Rheinfels mentioned earlier), Mainz and many others. It is a great area with much history and charm. I love the area and have probably visited it a dozen times now and never get tired of it.

Godd luck with your plans.
