IMHO - One night Salzburg, no nights in Hallstatt, 4 nights in Veinna, last 4 nights in Munich. (If you're like me, your first day/night in Munich will be a fog and a blur.) Have fun.
I'd stay 1 night in Hallstatt and add the other night to either Salzburg or Vienna.

I'd also skip Innsbruck, perhaps relace that with 2 nights along the Romantic Road...either Rothenburg, Dinkelsbuhl, etc..and then slip over to Munich.

Hi

I would take some nights off Garmisch and add them to Munich. Unless there is a specific reason you are choosing Garmisch such as to hike, etc.

I would definitely recommend filling your Garmisch and environs time, with hiking. If you can get to Koeniggsee, please do! Also Partnachklamm Gorge was a good easy walk.

if you are really curious, I did a Germany trip report in September, either do a search on flygirl or do a search on Partnachklamm, either one will pull up that posting. and if you have any questions feel free to email me on

[email protected]

I was thinking of Garmisch for hiking and going up the Zug and if it rains we can also see the castle. Also we are going in July so will it be nice to be in the mountains. How is munich in July?

I think that one night in Rothenburg is sufficient as long as the stop is about 24 hours. From what others say elsewhere, Würzburg might be worth a stop.

No one will ever agree totally with your itinerary, we all have our opinions and special places. I think it would be great if you could include Rothenburg and I don't think 2 nights in Hallstatt is too much. I love Hallstatt and could spend a week there just doing nothing but soaking up the beautiful surroundings!

If you are comfortable with your choices, then do it!

Hallstatt is one of those places still on my "must do" list. But when I go, I wouldn't think of failing to spend at least one night there. How could you go and not do a very early morning and probably a sunset or early evening walk along the lake?
My guess would be to add that night by staying by the Konigsee at Berchestgaden for one night, probably between Munich and Salzburg at the beginning of the trip. Do the wonderful silent cruise on the lake in the morning, hike at the end to the little farmhouse past the lake for a goat cheese "lunch" and cruise back, then drive the short distance to Salzburg in the afternoon. The alternative would be to stay in Salzburg an extra night so that you could do the Konigsee/Berchestgaden area in a day trip.

You're spending too much time in Salzburg, Hallstatt, Innsbruck and Garmisch.

I'd bail on Innsbruck and spend a day in the other places -- and use the extra time to stay longer in the other places if you're having a great time.

But that's a great trip -- my favorite in Europe. Have fun!

Say I do bail on Innsbruck. Where would you add the other 2 days?

Do you have any idea what you want to see in the areas on your list? If so, then YOU should know where you might need more time.

I still like the idea of your spending some time in Rothenburg, or perhaps around Lake Constance/Bodensee.

It is hard to know how much time for example a city like Vienna really will take...and also how much time my kids will want to spend in it. Places like Garmish we can go up the Zugspite, go see the castles, go to the playcastle tyrol...Hallstatt has the ice caves or the salt mine plus the lake. I am not sure if 3 nights is too short for Vienna. I have never been there.

Having lived in Vienna for a couple of years, I always think you can find something intersting in Vienna.

You can spend the better part of a day at Schoenbrunn Palace with the beautiful gardens behind as well as the Gloriette up on the hill with outstanding views of Vienna. The zoo is also there altho I never have been myself.

The Hofburg Palace can take most of a day with the Imperial Apartments, the Treasury, the Spanish Riding School stables/museum, the arms and armor collection in the Neue Burg, etc.

There are many great museums in Vienna including the Clock Museum and the twin Fine Arts/Natural History Museums.

You can go up to the top of St. Stephan's Cathedral for a rooftop view of the city and you can go down into the catacombs.

If you enjoy hiking, you can go to the Lainzer Tiergarten where there are trails thru forested hills as well as deer and bird life.

There are markets such as the Naschmarkt, as well as many other shopping areas

If you are going in warm weather, you could spend several hours in Grinzing, having lunch or dinner at a heuriger (we enjoyed the Hauermandl at 20 Cobenzlgasse. From Grinzing you can take a bus thru the Vienna Woods up to Kahlenburg, where on a clear day, you can see almost forever.

There are several lovely parks in the old part of Vienna, including the Stadtpark. Volksgarten and Burggarten.

You can go to the Donaupark on the Old Danube and go up in the Donauturm (Danube Tower)where there are restaurants and another panoramic view of Vienna.

I could go on and on. I don't think you'll have any trouble filling up 3, 4 or 5 days in Vienna.

I initially thought of going to rothenburg...but I know my husband likes to do less driving so I was taking that into consideration. I am really leaning towards one more night in Vienna though. It sounds like I won't have any trouble finding things to do. Then we won't have to rush around either and can shop(which my daughter will want to do) and see more things and just have time for leisurly lunchs. What would you do with the extra day though?? Is there any where else that I could spend a night in that would be fun or where would you add to.

Bettyk has given a pretty thorough review, could add Schonbrunn Zoo - one the world's oldest and Prater - which is pretty dated (to say the least)- but if the kids like dodgem cars and small rides, its OK and next to one of the grimy sites of Vienna - Prater station.
For leisurely lunch and dinner - I have just posted an item a few days ago detailing Harrys Time (6 courses for 17 euro for lunch) and Thursday night at Kunsthistorische Museum for a great buffet dinner in magnificent surroundings (41 euro including 9 for entry, so go at 5pm for an hour and a half before some dinner interrupted by further viewings). Also added a detailed list of hotels I have just checked out on another thread from last week.
