Restaurants in Sultanahmet

Can anyone who's been to Istanbul recently recommend restaurants (any price range) in the Sultanahmet area, especially ones off the beaten track. Thanks for your help.

A small street leads off the main thoroughfare at the Sultanahmet tram stop. That is where you will find the Sultanat Restaurant, Divanyolu Caddesi Haci Tahsin Bey Sk. #11. Excellent food, largely Turkish business clientele at noon. They will take you to their kitchen if you have problems with the menu. Waiters are very good.
Extremely clean dining room and restrooms. They have a big dining hall on the upper floor, too. Prices moderate.

gladly. just got back a week ago and we stayed 7 days in sultanahmet, and we ate all over that place. our best meal was at Blue House which is not off the beaten path, but the combination platter was fantastic! the 2 other places we liked were right next to each other, one was the Cem restaurant and can't remember the other..more off the beaten path. they are both a block down and over from the Blue House.
it was pretty cool over there the entire time (around 50 F).

I also recommend Yesil Ev's garden restaurant. Very good food, nice service and live music (piano). In 1998 we spent about $90 for four, with wine.

Some other restaurants we got very good meals were:

a) Restaurant Sarniç (in a Roman cistern) on Sogukçesme Sokak
b) Ayasofya Pansiyonlari, also on Sogukçesme Sokak
c) Conservatory Restaurant, across the street from the Sarniç

Finally, I recommend you to plan going out for dinner at least once in Kumkapi (seafood). This is a traffic free large area with dozens of restaurants. Big tables set in open air, seating a mix of locals and visitors. Very good food, big time fun. You may either pay for food+transportation (about $24/person, beverages extra, ask at your hotel) or take a taxi on your own. If you buy the "package" you won't be able to choose restaurants ...

Paulo
