You will find many wonderful tapas bars in the area behind the Ritz hotel
which extends up to the Plaza Major and the Plaza Angel. Lots of small streets, with many tapas bars. This is also the/a theatre district. Have fun, Spanish food, beer and wine is GREAT.
I loved the many little tapas bars next to the Plaza Mayor. Each one specializes in a specific type of tapas. The most fun we had was in the Meson de Champinones (the one of mushrooms) There was this old man playing music and everyone was singing. These little tapas bars in are "caves" and are very charming and its fund to go from bar to bar. We also ate at a more traditional restaurant near our hotel. It was called Tres something, sorry I can't remember but I believe it is in the Fodors guide. The food and service here were excellent, they specialize in seafood.

Try Casa Botin: fantastic food and atmophere! Also Casa Paco was excellent (if you like red meat this is the place). Another good meal was Ciao Madrid (good italian food when you want something different from spanish food).

And a great tapas bar right on Plza Santa Ana is Cerveceria Alemana: the tapas were incredibly tasty!

Enjoy!

Hello Gerry! A friend and I just returned from 2 months in Europe. We spent over a week in Spain. After a while we got pretty sick of the traditional food especially the HAM!! HAM is everywhere in Spain! So, here is the name of a great Italian restaurant we found.....NABUCCO
c/ HORTALEZA 108
3 10 06 11
Buen comida!!!!
