HI everyone,

My husband and I will be traveling through Sicily at the end of September and would love to hear of any restaurant recommendations you may have to really experience the local tastes and culture.

We will be overnighting in Trapani, Agrigento, Armerina, Siracusa and Taormina.

The agriturismo Gigliotti near Piazza Armerina has very good food. The same applies to the agriturismo Limonetto near Siracusa.

We really enjoyed Oinos in Siracusa (Ortygia). A bit upscale, young female chef from Milan doing her takes on Sicilian food, cute waiter--a fun place. Tasty, especially the seafood.

We also visited a really humble osteria on Ortygia, a Slow Food rec. Food was quite good, especially the antipasti and the pasta alla Norma. Casual. La Gazza Ladra

Spizzulio is a wine bar in Agrigento with carefully prepared food (small menu, don't skip the antipasti or the cheeses) and a friendly owner passionate about wine.

With the possible exception of Oinos, these are not "you must go!", cross-town-for places. But they are good. My experiences are from March/April 2011.

Marija - really enjoyed reading your trip report. Can hardly believe the nuns would steer you wrong on that place, but maybe they don't get out much to do their own quality control?

Michael - we already have our accommodations booked, although the Agriturismo locations you mentioned look lovely. I am assuming they would only feed their B&B guests?

freedom - i think that many agriturismi have restaurants open to non-residents too.

you would need to look at their websites or phone and ask!

Limoneto is definitely open to non-residents and I think that Gigliotti also accepts non-residents--its dining room is too big for the number of rooms.

I can highly recommend both Rosso Peperoncino in Taormina's upper town (main street), and Al Giardino located in the lower town. Both have excellent regional food and good, friendly service.

Wonderful! Thanks for weighing in, Michael and Muskoka.... I will definitely check out your recommendations! Enjoying the regional food is as much a part of the traveling experience as the sites for us!
