reservations on the TGV

At the end of our trip to France in mid April we are taking a TGV from Montpellier to CDG airport the night before we fly out. We will stay at a hotel at the airport that night.

How soon before our trip to we need to make reservations on the TGV?

Thanks, Hans.

On a few occasions, going from Bordeaux and Lille to Paris, I've waited until the last moment and made the reservations but it's a risk. Most of the time the morning trains to Paris are crowded. If you're going to be in Montpellier any length of time, why not stop in the station and make your reservation in andvance? The city is big and, unlike smaller towns and cities, the station may have open ticket windows during the lunch break, noon to 2:00 pm.

Easter is in the last week of April and Labor day is May 1st in France. So the sunday evening trains and monday 1st should be quite crowded with people returning from a short break at seaside.
You can make a reservation from any train station in France, even if you leave from another one.
check www.sncf.fr for more info and maybe online reservation.

We have made last minutes reservations, but TGV can get fully booked up so you should not wait longer than necessary.

We have made reservations from 3 different stations, 3 different experiences. This is the only place I actually encountered the dreaded rude people, it was not much different from renewing a driver license at a state department of motor vehicles office.

Nice was the worst. I had to take a number to wait for 1 hr just to talk to the rudest ticket clerk to make a TGV reservation. A poor soul who asked how long the wait was got an earful "I sell tickets, your job is to WAIT!"

Montparnasse clerk was just as terse, only no waiting number needed.

Gettting reservation for TGV at Amboise was a snap, no wait, a friendly clerk.

So next time, I would try to do it at a small station or when I see advance reservation window with no waiting line.

Hans:

You can't book train reservations until approx 6 weeks in advance. Book then, and consider looking at this web site to book and look at train times:
http://www.raileurope.com/us/

You can call them too - I've used them and they are very good.
