I am a bit confused. Once I arrive in CDG and want to get to Porte d'Orleans which is not covered by the RER line, do I have to purchase another METRO ticket or do I just connect to the other Metro Line and continue to use the same RER ticket line?

Can anyone advice if the area of Porte d'Orleans is a recommendable area to search for a hotel?

No, you don't have to purchase another Metro ticket; once you are in the system, you are in the system (going back you do have to buy the more expensive ticket). You would change at Denfert Rochereau to Line 4 (2 more stops).

Any particular reason you are interested in that area? I think it's OK, but a bit out of the way.

You are at the South end of the no. 4 Metro line. It will take about 20 min to get to Metro St.Michel, which is about the center of what you will want to visit.

It's not very central to stay by Porte d'Orleans, but it isn't all that unpleasant either. The main drawback, espec. if you haven't been to Paris before is just that it isn't near any of the typical sights. But transportation options, both by Metro and bus, are excellent. There are plenty of cafes, shops, etc in the area, and the pleasant Parc Montsouris is a stroll away. If you have a package deal that really is a deal, then it isn't a bad area. Do note that Porte d'Orleans is at the periphique and there could be traffic noise heard within your hotel...

On the other hand, my favorite hotel at Ecole Militaire is handy to the Eiffel Tower and Invalides, but it takes 23 minutes to get to the Louvre.

So what?

Stay where you want to and don't worry about proximity to sights. Paris is a very compact city, and nothing is very far from anything else.

I agree with Robespierre that Paris is compact, so staying out at Porte d'Orleans isn't that far, but I also agree it isn't really necessairily all that fun a neighborhood. If there is a reason you need to be south, you might also look at staying at Denfert Rochereau itself(which is direct on the RER line as LV mentioned), especially in the area around or on rue Daguerre, which is a lovely little market/walking street. I have seen a number of hotels listed there, as well as the larger street General Leclerc, that it crosses. It is a great area and nicer than the porte area IMHO.

I don't know when you're planning to be there, but at the moment Porte d'Orleans and the Boulevard Brune / Boulevard Jourdan areas are part of the construction zone for the tramway that is due to be completed (I think) in 2006. We were there Thursday, and the construction makes walking in the area a bit more difficult than usual -- not impossible, just difficult.

Directions:
Take the RER B from Roissy CDG to Denfert Rochereau. Change to Metro Line 4, use same ticket and go through second fare gate.
Take 4 Direction Porte D'Orléans to Porte D'Orléans. Use the same ticket throughout your whole journey.
