Report from Croatia and Slovenia

Photos from inside the beautiful walled city where walking around the ramparts (little less than a mile) is probably the most popular thing to do.
If you come here, just make sure you don’t come in the summer where it is evidently very hot and crazy crowded. May, September and October are the best months weatherwise and crowd wise.
Our apt is just a 15 minute walk to the old town.
Fortress just outside the main gate
Time to go through the iconic gate.
The main street
Lots of churches
Walking the walls
Walking the walls
Fodor orange roofs!!!!
That clear water!

Thanks, sunbum!
After dinner last night, the old town was lit up. Wish I had brought my good camera. But the iPhone does a pretty good job.
BTW the walls date from the 1400s and 1500s. But some of the monasteries go back to the 1300s.
My dinner last night, grilled tuna. Delicious!
Joyce had the baked octopus which was also outstanding.
I ordered two desserts. This is the traditional Dubrovnik custard. Yum!
But this orange chocolate mousse was in another league. Would definitely get that one again.

Yesterday we took a 10 minute ferry ride over to Lokrum Island, the one we see immediately off our balcony. Has a long history going back to Maximilian who bought it. Very pretty with lots of trails.
Lokrum Island
On the ferry
Looking back onto the mainland.
Lots of peacocks!!!
Love birds of paradise, even the plant variety, lol!

Well it looks like you are not starving there !! Food all looks great.
Bring some of that dessert home for ziggypop and I. !!
Glad you got to go by boat to Lokrum Island. Did you walk up to the Old Benedictine Monastery there !?
I tried to place everywhere you were in Old Dubrovnik, you fooled me a bit ( but not for long! ) because after you came in through the old Gate and down Main Street ,
you turned around and took a picture backwards toward the Old Gate again. ( maybe some nice lady walked by )
It is almost 1 AM there so I am sure you are
Waiting for your Zagreb pictures !

gruezi, our tour leader said there was a name for all the Croatian men/boys who preyed on young, innocent and beautiful girls: seagulls!
Thanks everyone for the very nice photo compliments. But you know that only encourages me……
Now in Zagreb, I was EXTREMELY busy today shopping for my one and only:
We’ll ship it home.
Coral and lapis
Traditional gold earrings Dubrovnik style

dcd, I had a wonderful Croatia trip, but I didn't bring home any gifts like those! Guess traveling with daughters is not the same. I am really enjoying your pictures; they bring back great memories.

We have lots of seagulls here !!!!!!!!!!!, I live beside a Lake.
If that car is not electric , perhaps you should not buy it. Gas prices went up since you left. ! perhaps this would be a better buy !
How many days in Zagreb?
Are you in Upper Town or Lower Town ?
PS. Tell Joyce I said you are to buy her anything she wants..... she's worth it. !!

Greetings my fellow losers from Ljubljana, the capital of Slovenia! We arrived yesterday from Zagreb, the capital of Croatia.
Zagreb is inland and has a little over 1 million people, which is one quarter of Croatia’s population. So it’s a big city, not our favorite these days.
Plus there is ugly graffiti everywhere! And thanks to a 5.8 earthquake in the spring of 2020, ~2500 buildings, schools, churches and museums were badly damaged and many are still closed today. I suspect 25% of the buildings downtown are behind scaffolding as repairs continue.
Many other buildings have suffered serious neglect during the communist era (1945-1990) and need to be cleaned up/rehabbed because the communist government confiscated all the private homes and property.
But after gaining independence in 1995 and instituting democracy, the government is trying to find the preWW2 owners/heirs of the homes to give them back.
There are many beautiful buildings in Zagreb’s downtown as the photos below will show. Memory won’t permit me to identify them all.
They love bright gold!
Main Cathedral still closed for foreseeable future.
An amazing and renown cemetery
No room at the inn, so if you want to be buried here, and MANY do, you have to buy a plot when one becomes available (rare) and they average $25,000 each, some going for substantially more.
St Mark’s church
Gelato break!
Main Square
C one in case I ever decided to go back to work.
More typical Croatian jewelry for Joyce!

Gruezi, I felt so bad about your fall (how are you today?) that I shot these flowers in Zagreb’s Botanical Garden for you. And for Adey and everyone else here not feeling so good.
I know you love peonies, gruezi.

Zagreb has more than 40 museums, many closed due to the 2020 earthquake. One that’s open is the small Museum of Broken Relationships started by a couple in 2006 who had broken up but are still business partners.
Couples from around the world donate mementos of their relationship along with their story. Not all are bitter. Some are poignant and some are philosophical.
Zoom in to read the stories.

Happy top see you are still energetically touring about.
Yes , between the Serbian War in the 1990's and the earthquake , poor little Zagreb took a hit,.
I was hoping that Cathedral tower( Filigree Spire) would be repaired by now.
I figured you would get a "kick" out of the Museum of Broken Relationships..
I could label the building pictures for you but I do not want to show off.
Continue to be safe and happy and keep those pictures coming.
Guess you never took the Funicular !!

Funicular when you can walk?????? Percy, you don’t know Joyce, lol. Feel free to name the Opera/Theater/Music hall, etc!
We went to Lake Bled today. Cloudy but no rain. It is beautiful nonetheless. Photos to follow eventually.
