renting bicycles/day trip
Can anyone suggest a day trip out of florence into the countryside. We would love to find a place to rent bicycles for the day,(perhaps at a train station?) just to tour around the Tuscan countryside-
What cities outside florence, in tuscany would anyone recommend for a day trip. Thanks,

Hitomi: I found this map of Tuscany area that lists distances from Siena
http://idt.net/~manipuco/tuscany.html
It seems there are many good destinations in the 20-30mile range one way. Of course you would have to ride back or grab a bus, but I don't know if buses carry bikes -- we should start a new thread. I will look into it though -- as I might require a sag wagon myself.
San Gimignano 26
Volterra 31
Montepulciano 31
Montalcino 25
Also, I think just heading out into the Chianti region is probably a good bet. I am trying to map a route and will send more info when I do. When are you going to Siena? I still haven't found any day guided bike routes out of Seina, but I found a wine tour grapeadventures.com. Also check where you are staying, many hotels, villas have bike rentals. Will keep in touch.

Jodi, thank you so much for your information.

I am also interested in one-day guided tour out of Siena. Let me know if you find an organizer. I think I will check with the hotel once we get there. We will be in Siena on 10/14-16.

What I meant by 20-30 miles is a two-way distance. So, Siena-San Gimignano is only 26 miles, yet I read somewhere that it takes 75 minutes by bus. In the States, it would take only 30-40 minutes for that distance. I guess the road system is different (I should know that I'm from Japan--it often takes forever to drive 26 miles).

I read in a guidebook about a tourst train leaving Siena for Cortona on every Sunday through October. We may try that.

Anyway, thanks again, Jodi, and good luck to you.
