renting a car in Crete

I understand that there are a lot of local car rental companies in Crete. Does anyone know if it will be possible to rent a car in Chania and drop it off in Heraklion?

Shellee - I think you'd have to use one of the big companies like Hertz or Avis.

I doubt if one of the little local companies would let you do that - they'd have to employ someone to go and bring it back.

Hope this helps ...

Actually, I remember something about this. I believe there are some agencies other than the "big boys" with offices in both cities. At any rate, don't bother reserving a car now. Just wait until you're in Chania and you'll be able to get a better deal and perhaps find one with a drop-off policy by asking around, perhaps at your hotel, for a referral.

We rented a car with a local agency in Crete that we found on the internet. They were located in Chania. We picked the car up in Heraklion & dropped off in Chania--no extra charge. The driver came in from Chania to Heraklion, we drove him to an agency where he picked up another car for the drive back to Chania.

We rented through AutoEurope with a pick up in Chania and a drop off in Heraklion. We thought it was cheaper than dirt at the time!

We rented a car through [email protected]. We found their prices very reasonable compared to other companies' charges for an automatic. We were met at the ferry dock in Heraklion & it was returned in front of our Chania Hotel.

Thanks so much for all the replies. I figured I wouldn't need a car my entire time in Crete, but maybe the last 2 days and get my ride from Chania to Heraklion done with it.

I e-mailed a bunch of companies and found the best through Kosmos

http://www.kosmos-carrental.com/

I need to book ahead of time as I require an automatic.

Shellee we did exactly that last October and we just used a local car rental company our hotel referred us to and it was very inexpensive. We really enjoyed the driving around it was definitely a great experience.

Go for it and have a good time.

I will be there at the end of July. Although automatic is preferable, manual is okay too. Given that this is a very popular time, should I book in advance? What is a reasonable amount I should expect to pay? Thanks.
