Recommendations Needed for Copenhagen Hotel

We're planning on 4 nights in Copenhagen this July. Would like to spend under $200 a night in a central location where we can walk or take public transport. It's our first trip to Copenhagen. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

We are leisurely travelers who do not pack in a lot of things to do each day. Are 4 days a reasonable amount of time for a first visit?
Thanks very much.

We stayed at Hotel 27 back when it was the Mermaid Hotel. This is a perfect location, so far as I am concerned, and there are some package deals that can make it a good deal, relatively speaking. Check the hotel website and www.hotelscombined.com . It's since been renovated since I stayed there, so check the reviews.

As for four days, I think that is good. I can think of several daytrips, so if by chance you get bored of the city, that is no problem at all.

I would look into the aptly named The Square on Radhuspladsen (City Hall Square).
Nice modern design, clean, overall a 4* feeling, but rated 3* due to the lack of an all-day restaurant (breakfast is served in a rooftop breakfast room). Good location close to the mein station, round the corner from Tivoli, at the beginning of Stroeget pedestrian zone (opposite side of the square). If there is a downside, I think the beds are too soft.

Both the Hotel 27 and The Square would be decent choices. The Admiral would also be good, if you can get it in your price range. I'm also a big fan of the Marriott, but location isn't quite as good as those others (though still pretty good). The Skt Petri would be another great choice, but I doubt you will get it at under $200 per night - if you did, I would jump at it.

You will NOT get the Marriott for that price unless there is some sort of sale I suspect...I've stayed in it three times and at all times of the year and it has never been that cheap, unfortunately.

The Marriott typically comes up for $100-120/night, when bidding on Priceline. Obviously, it is not necessarily available every day of the year at that price, nor is it 100% guaranteed you will get the Marriott from a Priceline bid (although I think it wins at least 90% of 4* bids).

I've seen the Marriott for under $200, and there is always the Priceline route. Regardless, it certainly is usually among the more expensive options, but wanted to mention it, in case the OP stumbles upon a good deal.

For what it is worth, the Square and Hotel 27 both look to have pretty compelling pricing for some random July dates I plugged in, as does the Admiral. Heck, even the Skt Petri can be had for $203.

There are also rooms closer to $120 per night at some of the 3-star Arp-Hansen hotels (http://www.arp-hansen.com/), such as the Strand. Can't comment on the quality of these hotels, but the locations of the Strand and the Opera are top-notch. If you aren't overly picky about your hotel, they might be worth a look.

We used Priceline to get two rooms at the Marriott a couple of years ago. We got each for about $120/night for a stay in August. The rooms have a good size and are comfortable. I found the location to be good.

Thanks, everyone, for all the recommendations. BTW, I have no aversion to going cheaper, so Travel Gourmet, I'll check out the arp hansen hotels, too.

I have been going on hotel web sites to check out prices, but except for the Marriott at over $350/night, I have had to write to the hotels for their rates. Very frustrating that no one gives their prices on-line or at least I can't easily find the links. Hotel 27 wrote back quickly and quoted me $244 for their least expensive room. I would like to go a bit cheaper. Any other suggestions out there while I am waiting for replies to my e-mails?

Did you try www.hotelscombined.com ?

I'd also suggest these sites:
www.hotels.dk
www.hrs.de
www.kayak.com

These sites are also good:

http://www.copenhagen-hotels.se/ (but I see that their site is offline until the end of March)

I'm not overly familiar with some of the sites mentiond here, but I would note that Expedia has pretty much every major hotel in town.

I've stayed at the Copenhagen Island hotel which has prices in July at about USD160. Although not central, public transport is easy from that location. Hotel is very stylish, room was small but had everything you need, the bar was nice too. It's also near enough to central station, maybe not walking though.

Personally, I would be careful with the Copenhagen Island. It is definitely a nice hotel, but it is pretty far out there - at least a 10 minute walk past the Marriott, which a lot of folks find too remote. Depending upon your needs and willingness to take the bus/train or occassional cab, it might be just fine, but it isn't near the traditional sites.

It is, however, pretty convenient to the Meatpacking District, which has some cool bars and restaurants. But I would note that the bars, especially, are impossibly hip and skew very young. And when I say hip, I'm talking hipster hip, not simply cool.

Thanks again, all. Prices are slowly coming in. The Square quoted me $243/night and the the SKTPetri was also over $240. I'll try some of the web sites suggested above, though I find I usually do better contacting hotels directly. All the hotels I wrote to offered liberal cancellation policies. Do you get the same privileges when you use sites such as Kayak?

It depends on the site, as to what the terms are. A common arrangement is to pay in full, but have refundable terms. Of course, with bidding on Priceline, it is nonrefundable. I have saved amazing amounts by using the above sites, compared to the hotel booking site, but it can vary. Once for Copenhagen, for a trip I did not actually make, I found the best rate, for a hotel that seemed perfectly reasonable (although I did not end up going), was a fully cancellable, not-pay-in-advance rate on the Best Western site.

I think Hotel 27 includes a full breakfast, and a buffet at night, in their rates.

I got Kong Frederick for $172 including tax on Expedia for August, but not sure how the prices are now. You can do a search on Expedia with the map (on the right) to see the location and prices, then come back to ask about a certain hotel, or check TripAdvisor.

Thanks, Willtravel. I checked BW and I can get a room for under $200 with cancellation fees and even cheaper if I don't care about the cancellation policy. Did you book on Pederskram gade 24 for the BW? I'm wondering if that's the same hotel you almost stayed in. Would this be a good location?
Dayenu - I'll try the Kong Frederick. Thank you.
