Reading Material

Has anyone's reading habits changed over the last three or four months or so? Mine has! I used to like for everything to be calm and peaceful during a flight, and I didn't like for anything to agitate me, but since sept. 11th, I have been reading really suspenseful and enthralling books, and I am finding that I pay less attention to things going on around me, and before I know it, I am at my destination. Last two trips I have brought along "The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon" by Stephen King, or just about anything by King; and another is "Exterminance Cometh" by Robert Segarra. This last book is a masterful sci fi thriller that blends very well with events in the world to day. Check out this link...http://hometown.aol.com/brooklynboy59/index.html

Yep, I'm looking for distraction during my upcoming flight to Paris, and the more engrossing the book, the better!

My last two flights I was totally in to the books I was reading. They were Memoirs of a Geisha and Daughter of Fortune. I didn't even want to watch the movies.

My tastes haven't changed, but it's been a while since I've read a good thriller. Thanks for the recommendations.

I have to agree with you Gidget, I too have changed my reading habits! I started with biographies, but they didn't really do it for me, not on a five plus hour flight anyway! I saw that book you recommended, Exterminance Cometh by Robert Segarra at amazon and was wondering about it! I think I'll give it a shot. I already read Cujo on a trip to London a few weeks ago! Great re-reading!

The flights to Europe from the US are so long! even from the east coast. I have a trip coming up in the spring and I've been looking for a few books to take. Something that I wouldn't mind carrying around a little.<BR><BR>I looked at that site, Gidget. Interesting....Thanks for the recommendations. Bernie

Exterminance Cometh is an excellent book! I found it by accident, but I have read it, and re-read it many times since then! I also highly recommend it! The same author writes some poetry that I think would make excellent reading during travel. One other book is called Crow Hill & Other Poems by Robert Segarra. I saw it at http://hometown.aol.com/brooklynboy59/myhomepage/poetry.html<BR>I also saw it somewhere else, but I can't remember the link right now! I will post again when I can.

I love to read. Here are some I would consider for vacation:<BR><BR>Author Pat Conroy; The Lords of Discipline, The Great Santini, The Water is Wide. The first two are enthrawling, the last escaping.<BR><BR>Author Barbara Kingsolver; The Bean Trees, High Tide in Tucson. The second a collection of short stories.<BR><BR>Author Laura Esquivel (author of Like Water for Chocolate); The Law of Love. A love story in Sci-fi. Humorous.<BR><BR>Author Rumor Godden; An Episode of Sparrows. A classic. Sad.<BR><BR>Author Ken Follett; The Pillars of the Earth. A little fat for a travel book. Bought for me by my aunt because I am going to Europe. Recommended to her by a crazed so called scholar. Choppy pros, but interesting subject. Slow start, but sucks you in. will give you an interesting perspective on the Catholic Church. Wonderful for anyone envolved in building construction. <BR>

If you like Kingslover, you should try the Poisonwood Bible.

I read Exterminance Cometh too! I thought it was a good book! Really suspenseful and scary! It kept my mind on what I was reading and not on what the security situation may have been.

Give me Stephen King, Dean Koontz, or Robert Segarra any day, and I can sit through a tornado!

"The name of the Rose" is so suspenseful, that when I read it when it first was published I was on the beach in Provincetown and everyone was saying, How could you read a book with all this-it was that good.

A fascinating book that will make you appreciate the food in Europe even more: Fast Food Nation, The Dark Side of the All-American Meal. <BR><BR>The average American eats 3 hamburgers and 4 orders of french fries a week. Also, the average American drinks 56 gallons of soft drinks a year. <BR><BR>

I love Stephen King. Read just about everything of his, though. I'll check out Exterminance Cometh, thanks, Gidget. I would rather had reading something escapist to read on my upcoming trip in March. Kind of weird I'd be atracted to reading something about the end of the world, but hey, that's me, haha. Billy

I've always been into the blood and guts genre - especially true crime. I do like Stephen King, James Patterson, Nicci French, Richard North Patterson, Scott Turow...and any book that the blurb has the words "serial killer", "female sheriff", or "mutilated bodies". On airplanes,I like to watch movies dubbed in a foreign language, like Rob Roy in French. French with a Scottish accent is too weird for words.<BR><BR>Thanks, Gidget, for the reco on Exterminance Cometh, and the author.<BR>
