Rainy day suggestions for the Dolomites

Hi all,

Just wondering if anyone has good "rainy day" options for things to see and do in the Dolomites. We'll be staying in Alta Badia for a few days later this month. We've been before, yet are wondering... what if it rains? Believe it or not, it hasn't rained at all on our previous trips. There, that did it! Any help would be welcome. Thank you.

Go to Bolzano to see Otzi. Or, I like the town of Trento--read about it. Have fun--we will be there in 2 weeks.

I believe you just jinxed yourself! We had a rainy day in the Dolomites - spent the morning shopping in Ortisei and had lunch there. By afternoon it had cleared up enough for us to take a drive around the Sellagruppe and even take the gondola at Passo Pordoi for a short hike. Just watch the weather forecast!

I agree with the Otzi idea - if we'd had more time, we would have done that.

Hi,
Thanks for the suggestions. I should have mentioned we have seen Ortisei, Bolzano/Otzi, Brixen and Brunico. Any other suggestions? Something I may have been missing?

Hi Paul - We stayed in Val Badia and woke up to rain/ grey skies 2 or 3 times. But there can be a BIG difference between one valley and the next (- like any mountain area) - as I'm sure you know.

So my suggestion is always check the forecast the day before ... and plan accordingly.

One day we left rain in Val Badia and found sunshine at Lake Braies. Another day we found it in Val Gardena.

Have you been to Vipiteno? Canazei/Val di Fassa? San Martino? Lienz? Innsbruck?

Hausfrau... yes, that "jinxed" it for us! Hopefuly not though.

Steve,

Thank you. I do understand that the weather can differ between valleys. We have been to Vipiteno, Innsbruck, San Martino, Innsbruck, Canazei, etc. During our short stay we are hoping to take either the cable car Val di Fassa or the one along the Sella Pass.

I did see that there is an event called "Gassltörggelen" in Chiusa/Klausen while we're in La Villa. We were thinking of combining a few hours there along with a visit to Brixen.

Can you (or anyone else) recommend a visit to either Trostburg Castle in Waidbruck (Ponte Gardena) or Burg Taufers by Brunico? Do you know of any other castles worth a visit in the area?

Our plan (we have reservations) is to arrive in Munich and drive to and stay 3 nights in the Zillertal (Austria), 3 nights in La Villa (Alta Badia) and then drive the Grossglockner Road (we drove this 3 years ago) and stay 3 nights in Ramsau (by Berchtesgaden) before flying home from Munich (late afternoon flight).

Any other thoughts or suggestions would be appreciated.

Paul - The only castle I've visited is Trento - but maybe that's further than you want to drive from Alta Badia.

I tried to visit Presule Castle (- near Siusi/Sciliar) a couple of years ago but unfortunately couldn't make it.

(- guided tours daily except Sat.)

Hope this helps ...

Steve

P.S Have you been to Lake Braies?
