Rain in Amsterdam?

We're off to Amsterdam in 2 weeks. I come from L.A., where we have wimpy rain (assuming we get rain at all). I figure it will rain in Amsterdam, but the question is, is it an easy-going, light rain, or will it be the kind you get in D.C. in the summer, where all hell breaks loose?!?

Everything is possible. Brilliant sunshine, misty rain, thunderstorms.

Spent a week in Amsterdam mid-July last summer. Got rained on 2-3 times. The rain was kind of misty once but I remember another time it came down pretty hard. Didn't last very long however. We just stepped into a doorway and waited it out. I don't think you really need to bring a heavy raincoat, a light windbreaker should be sufficient enough.

Have fun and enjoy!

Benita

I spent 5 days in Amsterdam a few weeks ago (mid-June). It was hot, sunny, cold, drizzly, gray, raining hard... ALL in my short stay.

I did fine layering clothing, tank, long sleeve t-shirt, etc. A polar fleece vest (which I "air packed" flat into a large ziplock bag) was my top and heaviest layer. This all worked fine. the few times/minutes if it rains hard it is easy enough to duck into a cafe or museum or something.

Thanks for the replies. I'll take out my dusty umbrella, and leave home the $5 rain poncho I bought during a heavy downpour in Yosemite (probably mouldy anyway). It might actually be nice to see rain -- I've sort of forgotten what it looks like.
