Not possible to generalize. Between which two cities?

Amsterdam to the Hague? Obviously a route for the train.

London to Nice? The train could cost one fourth of the second class train fare, one sixth of the first class.

Paris to Rome? Probably cheaper on train unless you get a promotional air fare.

Best wishes,

Rex
It depends, but factor in the cost of transportation to/from the airport or the train station, as well as the time. Some people get really obsessed with the romance of taking trains instead of planes, but you have to be practical--sometimes it is more expensive (and far more time consuming) to travel by train.
