This is one of Europe's lovliest rail journeys, but not one that can be accomplished in a single day, though there is an excellent overnight train from Barcelona to Milano - called the Salvador Dali and run by Elipsos - but a journey by dark is scarcely a good way to admire the scenery.

I would suggest the following. In all, you are looking at a total travel time of about 22 hours, so the journey could be completed in two or three days with overnight stops.

For example:
Day One
from Barcelona at 8.45 am on the Catalan Talgo direct to Monpellier. Change there for connection to Antibes (which arrives 7.12 pm).

Day Two
From Antibes at 9.14 am, changing at Ventmiglia, Genova etc, to reach Arezzo by about 8 in the evening.
Hope this helps.

Hi Les - I don't think there's really a 'choice' of route - unless you want to take a long detour through the Alps.

The main route runs along the French Riviera via Nice and Monte Carlo, then the Italian Riviera to Genoa and La Spezia.

From there it continues via Florence to Arezzo.

That is a long way---I would fly to Florence or Perugia.
