Radda/Siena..restaurant choice help please?

We'll be at a late afternoon olive oil tour/tasting near Radda and want to go to dinner afterwards...are considering going into Siena to Cane e Gatto or staying near Radda at Le Vigne or Ristorante Vignale...any preferences by people who been to any of them?? We may not get back to the area again so want the "best"! Thanks.

Badia a coltibuono is a long stone's throw from Radda. It also served us the only disappointing meal we had in Tuscany last year. The setting, however, is beautiful.

There has been a lot of info on Cane e Gatto on these boards lately...I think if you put the name into the search at the top, you'll see some remarks about it. Other than that, sorry can't be of more help!

Hello bashful, Siena is a good drive from Radda and especially at nite. The best meal we have had in that area was the Castello Spaltenna just outside of Gaiole. It would be much closer--about a :25 drive. The Antica La Torre in Castellini is another good choice.

Bob..we'll be going to Siena in the daytime but travelling back from there in the dark to our villa just south of Florence. When I bring up the routing on the michelin site, it actually says its faster to get to our villa from Siena than from Radda...does this make sense? If so, I would like to try the Cane e Gatto if it makes sense to do so as I've hear good things about it.

A couple of years ago we tossed a coin between Badia a Coltibuono and Restaurant Vignale and regreted it.I would agree with the other poster regarding Badia a Coltibuono - a beautiful setting but the food was disappointing. We stopped by Vignale on our way back to Cortona and the menu looked terrific (plus friends of ours have stayed there and raved about the restaurant).

We stayed in Siena last year and ate at the Cane E Gato--- what a treat!!! the meal last about 31/2 -4 hours-- so if you are planning to drive it may a little bit difficult that late at night on the Tuscan roads--- we took a cab to our hotel after dinner!!! Especially after all the wine that Paulo serves with dinner--- it is quite an experience. We are going back next month and staying in Montefollonico and in Gaile--- we were looking forward to eating at the Badia et C -- however now I feel that we may need to change our mind since this post was less than flattering about the experience! Please reply!!
Thanks
Mary

We had a wonderful dinner at Le Vigne, and the staff were extremely warm & friendly. Don't know if it is a concern but Le Vigne is less expensive than Cane e Gatto. However, the meal we had there (Cane e Gatto) was just an unforgettable experience. Make sure you book in advance. And, we also ate at Badia a Coltibuono - another vote for great scenery but average food.

Hi bashful -

I wrote a few weeks ago about my meal at Cane y Gato and how it was the best of my life. But you truly cannot leave until 11:30 to have the full experience. Try spending that night in Siena? You won't regret it.

IF YOU can get a reservation at Cane e Gatto and a hotel room in Siena for the night, please go for it. It's just about the nicest restaurant in the area. I'm really sorry to hear of disappointment with the Badia--it used to be so great. I'm sure it's still a great venue, but it's upsetting that the food doesn't match up.Another smaller trattoria in Siena is Taverna Nello---still great food and close to the Campo.

OK then, where is a good place to stay for just one nite in Siena? Is there any place at all that we could book into at the last minute if we just couldn't face the drive back? Unfortunately there's several of us (5 families to be exact!!)..so this becomes a bit of a logistics nightmare but we really don't want to miss the Cane e Gatto...

Bashful, I'm interesting in finding out about the olive oil tour/tasting that you have planned. Can you tell me where you are going and how you reserved the tour? Thanks.
