Rick Steves said it is beautiful and away from tourists.

Right, no tourists in Quince Terre at all. But the Cinque Terre is mobbed with them.

But, Quince Terre sounds so yummy.

It's right over on the other coast from Venice and too far for a day trip. It's a collection of villages that you walk between and IMHO much overrated.

Not worth the trip from Venice.

And it will be full of tourists clutching their Rick Steves guidebooks.

Why would you want to go to Cinque Terre if you don't know what it is and can't spell the name of the town so you'd never find your way there anyway.

It would take you the entire day to get there from Venice so you'd leave Venice very early, drive or take a train to Cinque Terre, take a look and turn around to go back to Venice.

Yes you can enjoy it in a day but you can't do that from Venice.

I suggest a map and a guide book for further exploration of Italy.

Venice - Cinque Terre is about 5 hours each way by train. It's infeasible to go down and back in 1 day.

It has been overrun by tourists for at least the past 10 years, all due to Rick Steves claiming that it's not on the tourist trail. Maybe in 1993 that was true. Maybe in January it's true.
