Quick weekend trip to Europe-where to go?
I'll be in Europe on business in February and can spend a weekend somewhere on holiday. I'll be ending my business in London, but I'd prefer not to stay there--London/England doesn't really do anything for me. I'm looking for somewhere within an hour or so flight from London. Any suggestions?

I would suggest Berlin.
Great monuments, walks, easy transportation to get around.
Inexpensive.. good hotels.. and wonderful restaurants.
Also hundreds (literally) events daily between recitals, concerts, plays, etc to choose from.
I call it Europe's Manhattan.
Nice mix of old and new.

5alive-
I've been to London several times, winter and summer. We mostly like to stroll, and soak up the local culture. London is too rushed, crowded, etc., and we've already done all of the big "sights". My favorite trip there was when we stayed out at Gravetye Manor near Gatwick.
I love Paris--it's probably my favorite large city in Europe, but I was just there for Thanksgiving.

Try some place new. Check out Ryanair and Easyjet to see what flights work in your time frame. It sounds like you are well traveled and have been to most of the highlights. Some thoughts off the top of my head are:
Brugges (sp?)
Lyon - for the food
Ljubljana
Budapest
Geneva
Let us know where you choose!
Cheers,
Jan

bilbao is nice. guggenheim (lunch there reservation only).. good tapas everywhere. two nights are plenty.
easy to get around.

An hour from London cuts your options down dramatically - Edinburgh, Dublin, Paris, Amsterdam, Brussels (if your hour means flying time - you won't get anywhere in less than four hours door to door).
Copenhagen, Berlin, Barcelona, Madrid, Lisbon (something to be said for going further south in February) are all at least an hour further away.

Dear all- Thanks for the suggestions. Trying to get a quick taste of something new, so I'll start looking into flights to Budapest, Ljubljana, Edinburgh, and Copenhagen. I'll post where we end up going.

The island of Madeira - Portugal
(Lisbon too is another suggestion along with the Lagos in the Algarve region). Believe there are good package deals with half board available from travel agents (also try BA/Portugal airlines). Weather should be reasonable for February - see the website listed below - also check out the right hand side Portugal general section as well.

Look forward to reading of your final choice.
