Quick Trip to Nice Report
Hi all. I just got back from 4 short but glorious days in Nice and thought I'd pass along a little information to any interested.
We stayed at the Hotel Westminister and it suited us very well. We were in a corner room on the top floor (5th) and while it was a little noisy it had a great view, balcony and was very spacious with separate toilet from bath/sinks. Some nights we used earplugs but it wasn't really that noisy unless you are a super light sleeper. We loved the flower market as well as the antique market on Monday morning (both in the same place about a 15 minute walk from hotel). Wandering around old Nice and the pedestrian shopping areas close to the hotel and along Les Promenades des Anglais were our favourite things to do except, of course, for drinking wine and enjoying the great seafood in Nice.
Speaking of food... Baracuda (sp?) right around the corner from the hotel had good French/Italian food at reasonable prices. Les Viviers is a wonderful French seafood restaurant on Rue Alphonse Karr. The owners greet everyone and are warm and friendly - food is excellent but not cheap. We also went to L'Ane Rouge (the red donkey) for a wonderful meal right on the harbour - super food, superb service and it all shows up on the bill! I didn't eat at Le Chantcler at the Negresco because others with us did have supper there and didn't find it worth the price or as good as the other restaurants we visited. The hotel and lobby is definitely worth a look - beautiful.
Flower market was great as I said but the olive wood pepper grinder we bought was $10 more expensive there than at a store close by. Live and learn.
Any questions welcome - we had a wonderful trip with lots of sun and warmth. Virtually everyone spoke English - although I do speak a fair amount of French and love to practice it while on a trip.
I did pick up many great tips on the boards including "bring your own washcloth" - my husband thanked me many times for that one! Questions welcome.

My husband and I were in Nice just a couple weeks ago. Your summary made me feel the delicious sun and salt again. The antique market is really something as are the natives out looking for a bargain. Welcome back!
