Purchasing Daum Crystal?
Hi!
I really like Daum pate de verre crystal that is made in Nancy, France. Has anyone traveled to Nancy and visited their glassworks? Do you know if it is less expensive in Nancy versus Paris versus the USA? What about other luxury goods like Hermes scarves? Anyone have any stories of really killer deals they picked up in Paris?

Leslie,
There are no steals in Paris. That said, you can find many French (and Italian) made goods at lower prices than in the US, it mainly depends on the rate of exchange you get. My advice would be to check prices here of items you would like to purchase. Then you will know how much of a savings you are getting. Don't forget to factor in the return of the VAT tax.
My experience last October, when the dollar was very high, was that you saved approximately 20% on many luxury items. I bought some Daum pate de verre and it was less. Same for Hermes scarves. I just can't remember exactly how much I saved. Another helpful hint: If you are planning to buy a lot of smaller ticket items, go to Galleries Layfayette. Then you can take all your receipts to the detaxe area to apply for your refund. They carry a lot of luxury items and their ceiling is a must see.
Good luck!

thre are good buys to be had at
I found at Cristal Vendome which is on rue de Castiglione a few doors south of the entrance to the Intercontinental hotel. They handle
Daum and others, it's a small store but they will order what they don't have in stock

I can't tell you about Nancy but it's certainly cheaper in Paris than in the U.S. Go to Galeries Lafayette. Get the 10% discount coupon. The crystal (Lalique also) will be cheaper, then the 10% off makes it even more. Then get back the VAT (another 13%) if you spend 1200FF on the same day there. Printemps next door also. There's also a Daum store on the rue de la Paix near rue Danielle Casanova. Cheaper there also, the VAT return also, but you won't get the 10% discount. For more got to: www.anamericaninparis.com
